Returning to MD/DC Area

Anonymous
Hello all. My husband and I have decided to return to the Maryland area after living in Atlanta for 3 years. But now we have a 3 year old little boy and we have to think about pre-school, daycare, ect. Some of the abbreviations used on this site if foreign to me so I could use some help. I hear people talk about the "Big 3", use terms like DS, or DC, and NCRC. I would appreciate any help. I have tons of questions but will post them in the proper forums. Thank you in advance for all your help.

PS..I don't know if this will help at all but we will looking at the Silver Spring and Takoma Park neighborhoods to live. Any information on those locations would be great as well.

There is a new catholic school in Silver Spring that sounds like a good fit, Saint Francis International School. Challenging curriculum, new facility, engaged parents, and easily accessible. Look into it...

A good fit for three-year-olds? A good fit for people who don't know acronyms? A good fit for people from Atlanta?

DS means "darling son" and DD means "darling daughter." DC means "darling child" or "I don't care to give you the gender of my child" or "District of Columbia ... a location!!"

To make it a little more organized for you.
DS- Darling Son
DD- Darling Daughter
DC- Darling Child
Then, the "Big 3" is just 3 schools which are percieved to be the 3 best in the DC metropolitan area. The "Big 3" is usually Sidwell Friends, National Cathedral, and St. Albans. However, it's a very argued up topic in this area. It is just like picking the #1 college in the US. Some will say Harvard, some will say MIT, etc. SO it differs but the vast majority agree that the "Big 3" consists of Sidwell, National Cathedral, and St. Albans.

Are you planning on DC private school? Most people in Silver Spring keep their kids in Maryland schools, especially for preschool. The aparentinsilverspring.com blog has a good list of preschools near where you plan to live.

this is not correct as National Cathedral and St. Alban's are only counted as 1 since they share a campus a (National Cathedral = all girls St. Alban's = all boys).

People will argue but the "Big 3" are Sidwel, the National Cathedral schools (Beauvior, National Cathederal, St. Alban's) and Georgetown Day School

There are some great other privates that are better fits for a child / family. Some of these include Lowell, WIS, Sheridan, Maret. (Given that you are thinking about SS/Takoma Park I am focusing on the core DC schools as opposed to Potomac / Virginia). I am not familiar enough with the Barrie School in Silver Spring but given where you are looking to live you might want t explore it.

NCRC = National Child Research Center

Some will classify it as a desirable preschool, a feeder to the "Big 3".

That's potentially very confusing (you are using National Cathedral to signify two different things). What you probably meant was: "People will argue but the "Big 3" are Sidwell, the Cathedral schools (Beauvior, National Cathederal, St. Alban's) and Georgetown Day School "

"D" commonly refers to "dear," not "darling," on internet forums.

Dear ... Darling ... same sentiment.

No, by common usage on the Internet, it is "dear," not "darling."

Check it out at wikipedia.com: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_acronyms_and_initialisms:_D.

Thanks for the snarky replies. I guess I'll just stay in Atlanta.

Maybe you should, if DCUM scares you so much.
