Curious to see what locations people consider “middle of nowhere____” locally.
There is a new viral video on social media for Red Truck Bakery in Marshall being labeled “middle of nowhere Virginia” to which some replied and dismissed due to the proximity and being in the DMV metro area. |
| Marshall is not in the DMV metro area. |
| Southwest VA, close to Tennessee. |
| Danville, VA It isn't near a major city, the beach, or SNP. |
|
Maryland: Westminster, Manchester, Parkton, Millington, Smithburg
Virginia: Farmville, Martinsville, Warsaw, Franklin |
Fauquier county is in the DMV https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_metropolitan_area |

I don’t even think there is such a place in either state.
I grew up in the middle of nowhere WV. It was 30 miles to the nearest town of 17,000. That is rural. |
| My aunt lives in Garrett County, MD and that feels like middle of nowhere to me. She lives on several acres off of a dirt road. But she's only 20 minutes from Deep Creek so I guess its not as remote as it feels. |

Anything north of germantown is middle of nowhere. I grew up in Chevy Chase.
I would consider Marshall the middle of nowhere. It's definitely rural. |
| Does rural = middle of nowhere though? Salisbury, MD is more suburban city setting but I would say it could qualify as middle of nowhere. Harrisonburg, VA same. |
|
For me, middle of nowhere VA is anything past Dulles.
Maryland is anything past Frederick. |
Marshall is 2 exits from the end of the HOV lanes. People on the east coast have no concept of “middle of nowhere” - just because you can’t walk to a coffee shop doesn’t make it middle of nowhere. Parts of Maine and northern NE, West Virginia, North Carolina, and far southern Virginia are the only places truly isolated. If you don’t need med evac insurance as a useful precaution, you’re not in the middle of nowhere. Both north germantown and Marshall are within a 45 minute drive of world class hospitals. And 15 minutes from high acuity EDs. The vast majority of the population are within 10-15 miles from all of life’s conveniences. This just isn’t the middle of nowhere, it’s just rural. Go to west Texas or Wyoming for some perspective. |
| Middle of nowhere MD is north of Gaithersburg |

Grundy, VA
I can't think of anywhere in MD that would be analogous to Grundy. |
How about Highland country, VA? I think the largest population Center is Monterey with population of about 200. Rural in every direction, a long way from Harrisonburg, separated by a long stretch of national forest. |
