| What does it mean for writing getting a B for 3rd grader? His reading leavel is above average, and I think he scores like 205 something like that for MAP R in the fall. What could I do? This is the first time I see a B in his report card. |

A B isn't bad! B indicates "The student frequently demonstrates mastery of the grade-level standards taught this marking period."
During your parent teacher conference, you can ask the teacher for examples of how his writing meets the standards and how it doesn't. |
| Look at all his graded work and fix the mistakes. Not magic. |
| He is in third grade. It is completely meaningless. |
| It means there is some things that can be improved but still doing above average work. It means they are doing well. Why are you stressing over a 3rd grade B? |
| It means disqualification for CES lottery if it shows up on the actual report card. |

This happened to our kid, and I actually talked to the teacher (which you should also do). It turns out that while she’s testing very well, she’s not terribly focused in class (was reading books instead of listening), and that resulted in poor performance on the couple of graded assignments that had happened (one bad spelling test, on assignment where she sped through the prompts instead of reading them and thoroughly answering questions). So the combination of lack of focus and a low number of graded assignments caused the issue. Also caused her classroom behaviors to be marked as PRG instead of DEM for the first time ever.
While I wish that the teacher had actually talked to her and/or me rather than using the interim report card as a warning, I also get that she’s managing a class with a ton of diverse learners and talking to every parent at any moment where intervention of any kind is needed isn’t realistic. The grades DID prompt a good solutioning session both between me and the teacher, and importantly, between my kid and the teacher separately, and provided a really important moment to talk to our kid about the importance of effort and attention/focus. Good luck! |
| As PP said, B means "frequently demonstrates mastery." That's a fine grade. Do nothing except maybe ask at the parent teacher conference what else you can do to help in general. |
Not unless they change the criteria. CES lottery criteria is for 2nd marking period and winter map. First marking period (and interims) are not considered. Last year the criteria was an A in reading, and an A in writing or social studies -- in the 2nd Marking Period. Plus the winter MAP-R above the 85th percentile, locally normed. |
+1 You have exactly described my kid and their teacher and classroom. Approaching the teacher can be helpful. |
MAP score also likely isn't high enough for the lottery unless the kid is in a high FARMS school. |
I'm curious. How does that work with the grades being divided up by standards? Is it an A in all standards for reading or an A when they're averaged or what, do you know? |

My 3rd grade DD has gotten some mixed grades this year. She has an unruly class and a teacher who seems good but is also fairly new to teaching and didn't inform the parents about spelling tests. She also grades pretty hard. My DD has trouble concentrating as some of the other kids are a real distraction for her.
My DD is in the 90th percentile on Map R for reading and is getting mostly A's but some B's too in a high Farms school. |
That's not true is it? |
| is this a joke? |
