I have a kid on a High School volleyball team but he missed the club team tryout period.
I confused the girls tryout window with the boys tryout window. Can he still try to get onto a club team or do the rules prohibit adding anyone to the roster outside that window? I know in baseball, you can join a team at any time as long as you are not coming from another club team (there's an anti-poaching rule). Is it possible to do this with boy's volleyball? Or is there a practical limit because the teams are all full? |
I know that some girl rosters are not full after tryouts. Our club was struggling to fill some positions on bottom teams weeks after the tryouts were officially over. There are many different reasons, including family schedule conflict with the practices. They managed to spread the word and offer positions on rosters to players who did not have options after the tryouts. Some boys volleyball clubs may have similar challenges, but there's been quite a bit since their tryouts. You can contact them and ask whether their rosters are full. Since boys have fewer options than girls, I would assume that most rosters are at the capacity now. |
| To me, the most ideal thing is to call the individual clubs and just ask them whether there are still any spots available and, if not, there's a possibility of taking training or practice players. This is, of course, whether your son is willing to be a practice player but the worst a club can say is "no". |
In terms of the rules, you are correct - as long as he's not coming from another club he could be added to a team roster now. Whether there are any clubs with boys teams with spots still available, I don't know. |

Thanks all. I will ask if the clubs have room for a practice player. |
Has he played club before or just HS? If he’s played club, you may be able to find a spot on a team but you will likely have to drive a bit. Practice player is a good idea if you can’t find a spot of the roster. Players unfortunately get hurt sometimes during the year and they may upgrade you to full time if they need you. |
He never played before but he can jump. He is pretty athletic and has a lot of other sports that all seem to help with volleyball. Hitting/serving seems to take a lot of the same muscles as swimming. Blocking seems to use a lot of the same skills as rebounding a basketball. Soccer is always good for footwork, which is good for every sport but seems to be helpful for positioning on defense. I don't know if this is just him coping with the fact that it's too late to make a team but he said being a practice player would give him the most important parts of being on a club team because he just wants to get better for next year's high school season. |
