Colleges or summer programs like old CTY

Anonymous
DC used to love CTY (Hopkins summer), really into their traditions. Thought she found her people, made lifelong friends. It’s like a cult. Since the pandemic that programs changed a lot. Can anyone who is familiar with the old CTY and knows how special it was recommend summer programs and colleges that have the same special vibe?

Aww, CTY was my people/tribe/cult too. I’m sorry to hear it’s changed significantly.

No helpful suggestions for you, unfortunately. Good luck finding something.

My kid loved CTY and was so bummed when they aged out during the pandemic. Did find a similar vibe at the Virginia summer residential program. It was competitive to get in though, and the selection dragged out for months. They found the a similar set of friend group and academic rigor, but did miss the CTY traditions- like casino night and canon.

The pandemic was a chance to reset and get rid of some of the camper traditions. Which were beloved and cherished by many campers but also kind of a PITA and even a liability from the staff/adult perspective. If you haven't had experience with CTY you won't know what you're missing so won't affect your experience.

We felt the quality (ability) of student got worse and the curriculum felt too easy but can't confirm the latter; however, later classes generally seemed easier than the ones taken one or two years earlier. This feeling happened the term before the pandemic and seemed to be when they started advertising more. Anyone else with a similar experience?

Duke TIP was similar, and it’s gone now. From a different era, I guess?

Not OP but -- what is the "Virginia summer residential program"? Do you mean Governor's School? Governor's School entry is competitive and takes time. Could you clarify what specific program you mean, PP? Thanks.

Oops realized I didn't put the right name- it was the Virginia Governor's School Summer Residential Program.

CTY was amazing for my kid. They are in college now and still talks about how that program ecouraged their strengths and shaped their career direction. Those were my kid's happiest times.

Always thought CTY was a TIP knock off. TIP was life saving for me—is it no more???

Here's a link to the explanation of TIP's closure:

https://tip.duke.edu

"In more recent years, both technology and demographic trends have transformed best practices for identifying talented middle- and high-school students and approaches to helping them develop their talents for future success. Duke TIP was a national leader in that transformation, but the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated our efforts to better integrate Duke’s core strengths of academic rigor, student engagement and community into our pre-college programming. The pandemic also significantly disrupted the Duke TIP and Duke Youth Programs business models, which were based on providing a high-quality, campus-based, intensive residential experience to large numbers of students, and led us to make the difficult decision in 2020 to suspend these residential programs."

Now there's just Duke Pre-College Programs.
