My daughter is 13 months old, and when I came home from dinner last night, the babysitter had used one of the blankets on the chair and for some reason I sort of freaked (internally of course). Is this OK at this age? When did other people introduce non-sleep sack blankets? By the time I got to her she was sleeping on it, so I couldn't get it away from her. |
We did a blanket at around 10 months (with #2), so I think 13 months is fine! I just made sure it was a light enough blanket that she can breath through it if necessary. Of course, my DD prefers to wrap her blanket around her head like a turban, so I may be a little overly cautious in that department. Now that she's 22 months, she lays down and asks us to cover her when we put her into her crib. |
My DD is 10 1/2 months and if she wasn't such an active sleeper, I'd use one now. She rolls all over the damn place so she'd never be covered if I ditched the sleep sack.
I think 13 months is totally fine. |
When they are able to sit/stand independently - and pull things off their faces of course. I would also prefer something made of 100%cotton of that has holes on it (breathable). |
I was told that as soon at the kids are able to stand by themselves (pull up to standing) then it was fine. We used a receiving blanket. I'm lucky if it even stays on!! |
I waited until 2 y.o. because I was nervous and couldn't find any answer in any of the usual books/references. ![]() |
DD is 14 months and we still don't. I don't think it's unsafe at this stage (and I was a complete SIDS freak) but there's no way it would actually stay on her all night. She moves around a lot and when she's had a blanket she just cuddles with it, she doesn't put it over her. So we still use a Halo. |
Since day 1. We have some very loosely woven afghans so even if baby's face gets covered, they can still breath. In fact, I think the baby LIKES to feel blanket next to his face! |
My DS is almost 11 months now. Anytime I've tried to cover him (not alone - when I'm awake with him), he kicks it right off. He's a mover. That being said...I'm reading these posts and have a question. With cold weather slowly approaching, those that use Halos, can your child stand up in them? Currently, he sleeps in just a onsie or jammies (no footies). He's a hot box so he hasn't required a whole lot of coverage.
Thanks! |
Are these babies of yours laying on their backs with sleep sac? |
I have the same situation with our 12-month DS. He's regularly warm anyway so we don't put a blanket on him and sleeps with either a onesie or footless jammies. |
We tried to give our one year old a blanket and all he does it toss it over the side of the crib (after playing with it, chewing on it). I definitely don't think it's unsafe, but it depends on if your child is going to actually use it or not. |
Around 6 months, I think. She likes the silky feel of the blanket and uses it more for comfort than warmth. I saw that they had used a knit (i.e. holey and breathable) blanket in her daycare crib, internally freaked out, and settled down into using it every day.
She's a roller, too, so we use a sack at almost 1 year. She can stand and walk in her sack -- I had hoped it would be a deterrent to escaping the crib, but not so much. |
I didn't use one until age 2 with my son. at 5.5 he hates any and all blankets and refuses to use one. With my daughter I started at 10 months. She hated the sleep sack and a small blanket tucked under the bottom of the crib so it was harder to loosen worked best for us (my daughter is not a huge mover at night). |
My very mobile while sleeping 10 1/2 month old wears a muslin sleep sack and has no issues standing, sitting or crawling around the crib in it (trust me - she does a LOT of it before falling asleep). |
