Cross training

9 year old is swimming 2x a week and having a blast. Progressing well. What's a good exercise for a third day? Kinda for cross training and to build endurance in the water that's not in the water?

Any other sport that involves running and jumping.

At 9? Literally anything land based that they enjoy. Playing on a trampoline, rec soccer, rec basketball, girls on the run, tennis. I’d base this 100% on your kids interests and what is convenient to your house/schedule.

Swim does a pretty good job of building endurance. I’d focus instead on things that let her enjoy being a kid and using her muscles in more varied ways (versus the repetitive motion of swim).

I am with PP - your kid is 9. Why don't you all hit the playground together or go for a hike and spend some time. In a few years, they will have no time for you. You have three good years left where you are really central, then it will be more about their activities and friends. Don't rush it.

Your kid has all the time to decide whether they want to double down on swimming as their "thing". The earliest I ever entertained going up from 2 practices per week to 3-4 was when they turned around 11. All things being equal (technique, endurance, etc.), your kid will naturally see significant progress just owing to the average rate of growth in height and weight.

Also, cross-training at any age, but certainly at 9, doesn't have to be an organized/deliberate sport. Playground, skatepark, nerf gun wars, backyard football, riding bikes around the neighborhood, etc. Just let them have fun and stay active.

Your child is 9. Do not call it cross training.

Sign up for another rec sport if the kid id up for it or go to the playground.
