My son’s high school tryouts start on Nov 11

All Virginia public high schools can't start the season until Nov 11 this year. It's so late and first scrimmages are the following week.

Yes it definitely feels a lot later than last year, which was over fall break days off

It's dumb to start to so late. Not sure why it is that way.

Is there anything you people won’t complain about?

Last year tryouts started much earlier in Nov, however they lasted until the following week waiting on Football season to wrap up.
A bunch of football boys joined tryouts late.
I think it’s good to have everyone start together

Last year, winter tryouts started November 6 - two and a half weeks before Thanksgiving. This year? November 11 - two and a half weeks before Thanksgiving. Next year? November 10 - two and a half weeks before Thanksgiving. And so on.

Does anyone know if it becomes clear at tryouts what team a kid is making or if they have to wait until the following week for offers?

It is clear after the first night, usually. If a 9th is being considered for JV, they will ask them to attend the JV tryout the second day.

Could they then attend the JV tryout and get knocked back?

Are you suggesting a 9th grader decide on his own to attend the JV tryout the first day instead of the 9th grade tryout? LOL. No.

At most large FCPS HS, there might be 1 freshman in the class or possibly two who get moved up to JV. They have to be incredible athletes and incredible basketball players to skip the freshman team.

Not, the PP. But, what I think the PP is saying is. Can a 9th grade be asked to tryout of for JV but not make it and still play on the freshman team. Yes, if a 9th grader is being asked to tryout for JV, it means the coaches like what they saw against 9th graders and want to see what the player can do against stiffer competition. Maybe it works out, maybe it doesn't. But being asked to "play up" is a good thing.

Yes, if they are asked to sttend the JV tryout then they will make the freshman team barring any behavioral issues
