SIL is DC’s aunt and godmother. She hinted that she might not be able to attend DC’s birthday party as her friend might be planning a birthday party that same day (we invited first, for the record. She hasn’t even got the invite to the friend’s birthday yet).
Would this surprise you? I get that grown up parties are more fun, but it’s her godson and nephew. |
| How old is the nephew? First birthday I'd think she'd be present. After that I don't think it's a big deal and wouldn't expect her presence. |

| No. |

My initial answer is no, although if he really cares, I would expect her to acknowledge that in some way ("I'm sorry I can't make your party, but how about I take you to the movies?")
An aunt who spends enough time with him on other days can miss the birthday party. An aunt who doesn't show up for much else can't fix it by showing up for the birthday party. |
| I never understand why parents expect other adults to show up to a kids bday party. If you want to do a family thing, do a family dinner at a restaurant or just invite them over for another round of cake at a time its convenient for them - but no you should absolutely not expect an aunt to prioritize milling about at a kids bday party |
| Come on, OP. Stop trying to be the puppet master of your family. |
|
I'm the aunt to two kids and have gone to all their birthday parties. I prioritize them. The older one just turned nine, and her godparents are cousins - they didn't come to her birthday party or the family dinner.
It doesn't have to be a big deal to miss a birthday party one year though. |
| No. She has a life. |

| How old is your kid? Is this a party at a crazy bounce house or fun place for KIDS? How close do you live? Can she come over the next day? |
| She's allowed to prioritize her own social life. Your kid will be OK. |

We need more information. How old is your kid? What kind of party is it? Is her friend's party a milestone birthday?
I prioritize family, but if my friend is having a 50th birthday party on the same day as my nephew's 6th birthday party at a trampoline park, I'm probably going to go to my friend's party. |
| Unless it's the first birthday - NBD |
| You are being ridiculous. |
