| Whats the purpose of MAP testing, for Magnet 9th graders? Do the results drive something? |
| It is absolutely no use and a waste of time... |
Has any 9th grader who had not taken MAP tests yet? |
| National norm scores do not increase after 8th grade, because no kid in the entire country cared about MAP in high school, so they can't even get data. |
| Nor did students ever care about these tests in ES or MS because even if a kid scores well, they don't get acceleration or enrichment other than a damn extra worksheet. So what the F is the point to test 3x/year?? sorry to students that this is what "education" is all about in schools. |
+1 Many kids opt out |
It can identify weak areas to work on, and these tests can be very effective in screening a large body of knowledge. Students don’t often take comprehensive tests, they are usually geared towards the material tested in class. They are useful, but few would review the identified gaps. |
At my kids' schools students are talking about these tests all the time. They told me dozens of scores children were talking about. If they are a decent student they do care. |
There are accelerated and enrichment option in MCPS ES, and map scores also impact being placed in lotteries for magnet MS programs. I would love to see more enriched and accelerated options especially at home MS, but please be honest about what is currently happening. |
| Good for Larlo and Lrla to care but most students don't give a shit about their scores. In fact students will zip through test because they know scores do not matter. |
Two steps behind, hello have you heard of AI? |
Those are poor students. When my kids go to RSM, orchestra, spanish lessons - everyone is talking about scores they got, their friends got, they heard someone got etc etc. But these are all good students. |
OP asked about magnet students. These are the ones with 3sigma above the 99% threshold. MAP tests are craps for reflecting any useful information for the kids at the tail. |
I was not talking about OP. In fact, I was talking about good students who are considering magnets. And - stop with the "3 sigma above 99%". That's 6 sigma above average which happens in 2 out of billion cases. So, no, the magnets are not chock-full of one in a billion kids.

3 sigma above the mean, which is 99.8%ile on national norms.
