MAP R and MAP M for Magnet 9th graders

At my kids' schools students are talking about these tests all the time. They told me dozens of scores children were talking about. If they are a decent student they do care.


OP asked about magnet students. These are the ones with 3sigma above the 99% threshold. MAP tests are craps for reflecting any useful information for the kids at the tail.


I was not talking about OP. In fact, I was talking about good students who are considering magnets.

And - stop with the "3 sigma above 99%". That's 6 sigma above average which happens in 2 out of billion cases. So, no, the magnets are not chock-full of one in a billion kids.


3 sigma above the mean, which is 99.8%ile on national norms.


right... and MAP score is perfectly fine for detecting those. At some tail point all tests break down.

Geez, I’m talking about sigma value of the tail distribution… in case you haven’t taken college level statistics course, tail distribution is different from normal distribution of the entire sample..
