I need to buy a few staple pieces to have on hand for dinners and meetings and for going out, casual and more dressed up.
I am thin but clothes don't fit and fall like they used to now that I'm 45. 5'4", 110ish. I also have a boyish body with not a lot of curves. I've been likened to Ally McBeal, but now I'm not as toned, waistline is not as defined, etc. Does anyone have any dress recommendations that they love? No v-necks bc as stated above, not a lot of curves. Would also appreciate any tips on dressing my body. Thank you! |
| I have a similar figure. I have quite a few dresses from J. Crew, Theory, Vince, Frame. They're basic / classic, but straightforward and easy to dress up or down. |
| Go to the gym. |
To buy clothes? |

You need to tone your muscles, OP. It's very important. And despite your recent disappointment with clothes, I promise you still look better in them than the people who are overweight.
So yes, go to the gym, and buy whatever the heck makes you feel great about yourself. I'm 44 with have similar stats, relatively toned (but not muscular in the least), and I wear whatever I want: mini skirts, maxi dresses, low cut tops as long as they're tight and don't gape (small chest, so I have corset-type tops, not V-shaped loose tops). In the winter I like to wear J crew tissue-thin turtlenecks that are full coverage but showcase my slim figure. I love wearing patterned tights when it's cold, paired with all kinds of mini or midi skirts, or short shorts (I have a pair of tweed shorts I love). I have a fun leather cutout steampunk skirt. You don't seem to appreciate how much being slim opens up the doors to fashion. If you don't like your waist, you can wear things that showcase your legs. Wolford makes great quality tights if you're so inclined. Bottom line, you will always seem more elegant than the other, more full-figured, people. Stand up straight and rock it. |
It would take months/years for a 46 year old woman to dramatically change her body shape. And even then, she might have the same shape but with more muscle. |
OP here.. thank you for this. I really do need to start a strength training regimen but it's hard to fit that in - I do walk the dog every day for about 45-60 min. A part of me feels like now is the time for me to tone up and and wear what I want, but my style is very simple and minimalist. And we're also in the crazy stage with high schoolers on the brink of college apps. I want to try some new styles but need a push. If anyone has purchased anything recently that they love and fit them well, please share. I need new pants! |
Thank you.. I used to wear a lot of Theory! I love all these brands. Any new styles that have worked for your figure? |
|
Do you have any wide legged pants? They've been on trend and look modern and will give you more proportion if you pair it with a more fitted shirt.
Or how about trouser skirts with knee high boots in lieu of tights? How about working in some more color? Do you wear color? Need more of an idea of what might appeal to you, can give more recs if any of these ideas appeal. Do you follow any devotees to the Row and those kinds of brands on Insta? |
PP you replied to. Oh yes, the semester my oldest was doing college apps I wasn't thinking at all about me or my clothes, to be honest. I was busy agonizing in sympathy with my kid

| You probably know this but Everlane and Quince are great for elevated basics. |
I have a 9th and 11th grader. Not sure I understand the mentality of putting off working out- you need health and stress relief too to be the best for your family. |
You know, there’s a way to make OP feel good without shitting on people with other body types. You were doing so well until that last bit. By the way, you’ve outed yourself with your repeated references to tweed shorts. We see you. You’re the one who likes to dress inappropriately young. You are henceforth known as Tweed Shorts Twit. |
lol. Pretty sure she talks about her leather steampunk cutout skirt too. |
She’s a moron who has no idea how to dress. Also many of us who actually lift heavy likely weigh more but wear the same size and look far better, obviously depending on preference. Skinny middle aged ladies, meh. Fit ladies with curves, much much better. |
