I’m not sure how you identify whether something is American or not.

There is spaghetti and meatballs but no pizza? Chicago deep dish or NYC slice should make the list.

How about sourdough bread?

Honestly. I love a good spaghetti and meatballs.

Fried okra, but no crabcake? Mmkay.

No chicken salad?

I have never eaten 11 of these - they don't appeal to me.

Where do you think chocolate chip cookies are from, OP?

I'd replace banana pudding, which I dislike, with crabcakes. That's a good suggestion. Also replace the hamburger with a cheeseburger or even better a bacon cheeseburger with a fried egg.

I'd also put some shrimp on those grits and find place for pizza of some variety.

What about southern fried chicken?

While we’re used to claiming apple pie as American (“as American as apple pie), I don’t think we invented apple pie, nor is our version especially unique. Pecan pie, on the other hand, seems more uniquely American.

As other posters have noted, crab cake is not on the list. Especially if you are from the DelMarVa, crabs should definitely be on that list. but chocolate chips cookie is? Is it because of Toll House cookies - Massachusetts?

Are you confused by chocolate chip cookies because you think there are better things to put in its place, or because you don’t think they’re American? I have no idea if Toll House has anything to do with Massachusetts, but the chocolate chip cookie as we know it is a distinctly American invention.
