DS will start kindergarten on Monday. Do I just pack all of his school supplies (from the recommended list) in his backpack on the first day?
Thanks. |
| Yep. Or put 'em in a separate bag. If it's just way too much for a kindergartener to carrry, bring it in with him. |
| Or send them in on the first few days...that should be fine. He has enough to keep track of the first day without being wayed down with a years worht of pencils etc. Some parents bring in things on back to school night if it is very soon. |
| It is expected in our school that supplies come in the first day. If they don't the school assumes you are not sending them and then gives your kids what they are missing out of the donated supplies. I always take the first few hours off in the morning of the first day of school to make sure my kids and all of their stuff gets where it has to go - and to take pictures. |
| I was wondering the same thing, but you can't walk your child into school, right? Meaning all you can do is put the supplies in the backpack, or else bring them in at back to school night like someone suggested. |
| On the first day, yes, you can walk your child into the school. We always do and the place is packed with parents. I also always take a few hours off that morning and do pictures at our house and all go into the school. Especially when my kids were starting K. |
| I'm told the teachers HATE it when the parents come in on the first day. They tell you to send them the way you would normally send them (i.e. if they will take the bus, send them on the bus). I have always respected that. |
We've always been told the opposite. Lots of Take-You-Child-To-School the first day initiatives and outreach near us. |
What district/school are you in? |
No offense but who cares if they hate it? For one day, teachers can show a little flexibility with something like this (not saying all do not). There's a lot going on the first day, lots to remember and sending a little person in with a mountain of supplies is made a little easier by the parents helping them out. |
I don't think they necessarily hate the parents helping with supplies. I think it's the whole photo op and parents getting in the way and hanging out. I had a friend who was eventually kicked out by the teacher on the first day of kindergarten. She was insulted -- I totally get it. She's a total helicopter. With a classful of kids, the teacher only has so much time to pose with your kid while you take the perfect photo for your perfect little scrapbook. |

LOL! |
| OK, I am confused - don't most parent put their child on the school bus? Or do a lot of people drive their child in on the first day? I was planning to put my DC on the bus but now I'm wondering if he'll be the only one! |
|
Well, PP, my child is older and a veteran bus taker, but since he changed schools this year and it was kind of a big adjustment (complete with an unfinalized bus schedule) I took him there the first day. I've done it in the past, too, and from thereon out he takes the bus.
But, lots of kids get on the bus the first day, too, and it works out fine. |

My kids are in SACC, so no bus for us. We usually go check in with SACC the first day and then walk our child to class. This year, I'm just walking with my Kindergartner, not my older child.
Also, we do all our photos at home. I take a picture at our front door each year. Nice to see how they change and grow. |
