Does anyone know what the staff to student ratio is recommended during lunch at the elementary school level in MCPS?

Not enough para educators during lunch and recess. Some schools welcome parent volunteers during lunch and recess.

The problem is largely behavioral, to the point that few staff members want to be in the same room as the students. It’s not worth getting hurt on part-time or even very low full-time pay, after all. Beyond that there are so many other issues going on at the same time that it can be hard to line people up who are actually free.

I don’t know if there’s an official policy. Our school has about 120 kids and 3 paras per lunch period.

Same. It’s complete chaos.

Not good. They were asking for parents to sign-up/volunteer to monitor kids during lunch/recess at our school.

+1. Teachers have duty free lunch in their contract. The only two times they don’t have students is lunch and special. So lunch and a planning period.

Lord of the Flies recess is what it should be named.

We gave several male paras who monitor lunch and its so helpful with authority.

Middle school is worse. My kid came home from his first day and his first comment was that it was a zoo and he had gotten hit with a flying piece of food as some of the kids were throwing it all around and no adult stopped them.
