Similar to mit - ses diversity increases The incoming class increased on measures of socioeconomic diversity. The percentage of students from low-income backgrounds, measured by eligibility for federal Pell grants, rose to 23.8%, Hopkins' highest percentage to date. The percentage of first-generation college students rose from 19.4% to 20.3%. The percentage of students who are first-generation or low-income is 30.2%. - black and Hispanic numbers got crushed Class of 2027: 34% black or Hispanic Class of 2028: 16% black or Hispanic m - white % dropped 39 to 34 % - Asian % sky rocketed 32 to 46% Jhu doesn’t practice legacy, isn’t in a sexy city, has hard grading, isn’t fun These % will continue. Doubt it’ll be a third white next year. |
| My white, middle class Hopkins sophomore is having the time of her life but thanks for this…pretty odd commentary? |
Interested in hearing more! My kid is very interested in Hopkins, but worried about the lack of social life/fun. We heard nonstem kids and athletes are pretty social. True? Is greek life active? She is interested in international studies (not stem). |
| Isn’t fun is really a “I know someone who went to JHU in 1989” vibe |
|
Looks exactly the same as MIT:
https://mitadmissions.org/apply/process/profile/ Asian American 47% Black/African American 5% Hispanic/Latino 11% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander <1% White/Caucasian 37% International citizens Number of countries represented: 59 11% |
Same here!!! I have a freshman and a junior, white, middle class kids who are loving every second. |
She is majoring in math and minoring in space science and still has free time (which is a big change from HS) and teaches swim lessons 2 days a week at a Y in Baltimore. She has great friends and they have a ton of fun. There seems to be a real comradery on campus. Her high school was very cutthroat and the kids like that seem to funnel into premed at JHU, at least according to her. I’m sorry, I don’t know much about Greek life, except the 2 lax players from our high school that go there are in fraternities. It was a last minute addition to her college list that I am forever grateful for! |
This is great information. Has she found the professors engaging? Accessible? As a parent, do you think the school is well run and is there anything we should be aware of? |
Yes, from an alum who was an international studies major. Approximately 30 percent Greek, there are six Panhellenic. Sororities plus the hsutricially black sororities. |
The internstional studies program seems very well regarded. Did u feel the department was well funded? So much emphasis on stem and wondering if that program is supported in terms of faculty, mentorship, employment, etc. |
Not having a legacy preference really hurts white admissions. |
|
I do think we as a society should have concerns about the implications of our institutions essentially being Asian and colleges trying to remedy it with higher populations of poor white students.
I also am very concerned about the current crop of low income students of color, who need the financial aid of the ivy-level schools and have the potential to excel, who will now be stumbled over. |
Funding not an issue. SAIS, the graduate international studies program, just got a beautiful new building. The college is committed to maintaining its excellence in international studies |
| You dont need a report to know this. My white DD stands out like a beacon. Check out their FB pages. There isn't a white kid to be seen. That being said, She really likes it. |
