Kia Telluride or Subaru Ascent?

Anonymous
DH is a huge fan of the Ascent. I’ve seen many, many Tellurides where we live so I assume it’s a great value/good purchase.

Which would you choose?

We have a telluride and we love it. Good looking, comfortable and so far (50k) very reliable.

Has he driven either? Don’t discount the pathfinder.

Telluride is nicer, but more expensive.

So over Subaru. Wheel bearings, CV joints, transmission making weird ominous sounding whirring and whining noises, head gaskets leaking oil, all before 100k miles. This is twice for us. Two Subarus, five years apart, exact same crap.

Fool me once, shame on them. We bought another one. Shame on us. There won’t EVER be a third.

Anything BUT a Subaru

It seems like with Subarus they are either great cars that last and owners love them, or people have an experience similar to yours. No in-between.

Not a Telluride but I LOVE MY NEW KIA! It's a Carnival. The tech is so techy. The engine so quite. The interior so roomy. The kids, so quiet.

Subarus were great in the 90s. You still see a lot of those outback’s and foresters on the roads today. It’s the 2004-2020 ones that are a disaster. I’ve had 3 of them and they all had issues. Lemoning the last one. It’s Honda, Toyota and Nissan for me from now on. Especially since their awd systems have caught up to suby. The outback is still enticing since it’s a unique vehicle and might be worth the risk. But I would never buy an ascent over a pathfinder, Highlander, or pilot.

They’re closer. I had a 2014 pathfinder and it would wait for the front axle to slip before engaging the rear. Total nightmare in snow and ice. My buddy drives his 2018 rogue through snow all the time. Plus, Subaru has gone away from the 50/50 split to a system that is not closer to 70/30 in the name of fuel economy. I’ve been a Subaru fanboy my whole life. I’ve had 5. I would not buy one made between 2010 and 2020 and would have to do a ton of research before buying a 2021 and newer. Suby has lost its mojo.

Very happy with the telluride. Turned in an old outback for it and very happy. Have owned a lot of Subarus over the years and im unlikely to buy another. All have had issues despite being low mileage vehicles. Styling is IMO aesthetically challenged.

Kia. People complain that the Ascent engine is underpowered

Op here. Yes, he’s driven the Pathfinder.

Great points PPs for Subaru as well. I was still under the impression they were 90s brand level/stability/durability.

Thank you!

We have both and like both. Our next car will be an electric crosstek. Pick the one you get the best deal on - that's what I would do.

Well, at least the cylinder head gaskets won’t be leaking a quart of oil every thousand miles.
