I have very high cholesterol and I’m skinny. People don’t understand my diet

…and they need to MYOB.

Just venting here.
When I’m with friends or out in public at corporate events, I get people telling me “oh just eat that burger” or what have you. They think I’m either vain, or have an eating disorder, or that I’m vegan (I’m not but who cares if I was?) because I meticulously watch what I eat.

I’m just trying to stay off medication for as long as I can. I’m 5’5, 115 lbs, 36 years old, and have hereditary hypercholesterolemia. I don’t want to have to explain that to everyone I go to dinner with. Sometimes it’s actually easier to just pretend that I’m vegan.

Just take the darn statin.

People suck OP. I'm sorry. Just try to ignore them. I would also endorse selectively telling people you are in a low cholesterol diet due to hereditary high cholesterol just to educate more people on the fact that you can't tell someone's health situation by looking at them. But people are dumb so this is an uphill battle. I also think "mindo your own business" is always appropriate in these situations.

Right, but she doesn't have to do this. Statins are available.

There are many other cholesterol medicines that are not statins.

What a dumb thing to say. She is not taking them for fun, you know.

My circle is aware of familial predisposition to high cholesterol, so when I explain this, they understand at once.

Perhaps you need to explain that some people (including a lot of genetic Scandinavians) have genetically high cholesterol, and need to tweak their diet in consequence.

I would just explain why OP, just say you have hereditary high cholesterol. Think it would help people make fewer comments in the long run.

What are you eating, or not eating that are drawing these comments?

Just tell them the you have hereditary high cholesterol and need to be careful. If your doctor recommends a statin, do it.

Are you making comments like "oh I wish I could have a burger" or "oh that burger looks so good" while looking sad and eating your grilled chicken and salad?
