Number of Colleges TJ Kids Apply to

Question: Since the admissions to colleges are more difficult for kids from TJ, what is the average number of colleges a TJ kid applies to. Pls spare the nasty comments if this question doesnot make sense to you. TJ Parent

Ask the counselor for more reliable data. Based on hearsay, it is about ten, around three in each category: Safety, Match, and Reach.

Admissions to colleges are more difficult for TJ kids with low GPA. Students in the top half of the class appear to be receiving desired admission offers.

I have heard of kids carpet bombing high target/reach schools.

"Reach school" is a relative term depending on student's standing within the class. If targeting a competitive STEM major, a top TJ student might consider UVA as a safety or match, but for a bottom TJ student it is certainly a huge reach. Because of the in-state tuition advantage and proximity, whether serious or not most VA high school students tend to apply at UVA, VT, WM, UMD, etc. The top 120 TJ students who ultimately accept offers from T-20s (national or specific major) would have applied at these VA instate colleges too.

Agree that 10 seems to be an average number.
