DH and I are solidly middle class (not DCUM MC), but our 6th grader has been lucky enough to attend a good private since pre-k due to some family help. We're moving next summer to a location where there are limited private options and the publics are not well thought of. To be blunt, our choices are a small conservative Christian school with very poor academics and public known for its violence and children's financial struggle. We've discussed it ad nauseum and determined the public is the best choice.
We know it will be an adjustment. Can anyone who's been in this situation give me some advice of how to make the best of this situation? How can we help DC with this change in atmosphere, academics, and most importantly, keep them safe? |
Stanford online high school? Starts in 7th |
We considered it, but DC is really too social. Covid remote school was too rough. |
Why are you moving? Can you live somewhere further away and commute? |
Military, so at least it's temporary. And no, not really. |
I would just have her take a lot of honor classes. |
Could always consider boarding school if nothing works out |
Private school and LOTS of outside enrichment/tutoring/teaching. Middle school is awful on a good day and that's with reasonably affluent kids. Throw in violence and that's a hard pass. I'd homeschool before that-am I despise homeschooling.
It's temporary. You can overcome the academic issues with lots of outside help. |
I'd take poor academics over violence every day of the week. You can supplement academics; trauma lives forever. |
yes, have her take honors or intensified or whatever the poor kids won't take. |
Private school all the way. Even if it is a fundamentalist Christian school with poor academics. At least your kids won’t hear students cussing out teachers, hear way too much info about graphic sex, see kids fighting, etc. |
Curious where you’ll be but I’m Jewish and private Christian sounds better. |
+1. |
Public.
I know well the type of tiny private Christian school you are talking about. These are not like traditional Catholic schools with good academics and discipline. These are the schools where parents send their kids who were kicked out of public. And a fair number of the teachers at the school will be people who were made to resign from their public school position because of doing/saying very inappropriate things to students. Lots of people send their kids to so-so publics and use the money they would otherwise have spent on private school to supplement. You said it was move for military, so you could also homeschool. Lots of military families do that so you would have a good network. |
No chance of a school on the military base? |
