Fairfax County may close a nature center!

Anonymous
Fairfax County may close a nature center and a historic site due to budget issues. Exact sites TBD (see the link below). This would be a terrible loss to the community and children, including those who attend field trips at the centers.

Please make your voice of opposition heard by emailing parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov through September 19th.

How are they supposed to make up the funds? Are you willing to pay more in real estate taxes? Have your services cut in some other way?

Yes, I am actually willing to pay a bit more in taxes so our county looks nice.

Obviously. You’re what is wrong with this country, BTW.

Not everyone shares your opinion.

Did I say what my preference was? No. I just asked a question to point out that trade-offs were real. You can't just have low taxes and fund everything and not borrow a cent. Economics don't work that way.

This is OP. Yes, I would gladly pay more in real estate taxes to keep nature centers open. I've given them thousands of dollars in camp and program fees, but outside of that, we've spent hundreds of hours at these places. We've invited numerous other families. The nature centers are one of the very best things about this county.

In any case, the additional taxes for the $644k in revenue to keep these open will be negligible. As cuts go, this won't even make a dent in the overall County budget but will have devastating consequences for families.

Those who agree, please write an email to the address above. It can make a difference. They closed a nature center and historic site about 20 years ago and it was reversed after 3 months due to public outcry. Let's just be heard now before that happens again!

I will happily pay taxes to fund our parks and libraries.

Super grateful we have an abundance of good ones in Fairfax County.

So give them the $644k?

So give them the $644k?

Is it $644K once?

Or $644K annually?

In a few short years, you will no longer care about things like this OP. This time is fleeting. And your very upset considering you don’t even know which location.

Not OP.

I went from caring about parks and nature centers to caring very deeply about athletic fields. Even though the interests change, I think we all have a reason to want Fairfax County to fund services that are good for kids and families. And I wish they would figure out how to do it without the endless bonds.

Yes, because you only care about things like this if you use them personally.

Not.

Being a Moco resident, it always struck me as a given that Fairfax county does not prioritize green space.
