Gov passport office lost my teen son’s passport and birth certificate.

I am beyond upset, I went to a local DMV (a month ago) that handles this and sends the material to the proper government facility and this happens.

I get in the mail that they received the request but not his passport or birth certificate. I thought I had a copy of his birth certificate but I don’t. I didn’t realize I had to give his birth certificate to the DMV official.

Clearly mistaken my son for someone else, passport office saying I tried to get his passport before a couple years ago. How tdo I clear this up?! We are to go away for Thanksgiving needing a passport. Argh ugh!

Well, Did you you go back to the DMV office?

Why would you go to the DMV for a passport and not the post office?

I don't think the DMV handles passports...Do you mean USPS?

You can order a new copy of the birth certificate.

DMV does not make sense. You can get another birth certificate and try to get it expedited.

I think OP means that they went to a private passport expediter in the DMV region.

TBH, it sounds like identity theft by someone within the expediter. I would be filing a police report and also alert the Dept of State.

If the expediter claims they mailed it, then report it to the US Postal Inspectors. They will actually be the ones who conduct a real investigation - they are hard asses:

Change your plans.

I never send passports by anything but certified mail. I also keep a folder with copies of passports, birth certificates, licenses etc.

Sounds more like stolen than "lost." You were foolish to use one of those services.

Passports can be applied for online now too. You only need to go in person for the firstnone. I would never hand over the sole original document of anything to a federal employee.

Not for a child.

+1. It doesn't sound like the federal office lost it; it sounds more like identity theft by the expediter. The USPS passport service does all the paper processing in front of you, hands you the documents back, and then seals the mailing in front of you.

Has OP confirmed that she went to an expediter?
