| My daughter has been invited to be a guest player in the WAGs tournament with an out-of-town team . . . has anyone's DD done something similar? Questions to ask the coach before committing? TIA! |
|
Many times. As about guaranteed playing minimums, if you need to supply your own shorts and socks. Current level of play and strength of their bracket. Don't ever kick in for fees if you are a guest. No one has ever asked. Tell your daughter to go in with confidence, be coachable, learn the team formation and attacking or defensive style. If local, DO attend a few trainings with before as you can so your kid learns everyone's names.
Also if it is local, consider they might be soft poaching you for future yeara. |
| If a keeper, ask norms re punting, playing from back, passing back to keeper etc. |
Do it! The more she plays the better and free for you! |
|
Ask about playing time as well as if the team plans to do a short practice the day before and/or an early pre-game warm up/drills before the game. This helps your DD acclimatize with the team.
Also, did they ask what position they need your DD to play at? If so, ask the coach about their expectation, tactics, etc. specifically as it relates to your DD’s position. |
| ^ Forgot to add. Just go out and have fun and play hard. |
Agree 100% on all the above except fees. If they seek you out to be a ringer, then yes, they’re covering your portion of the tournament fee. But that is typically an explicit agreement. Ie. “Our CB is out sick, we need a solid CB to win this bracket, and it’s short notice, can Billy help?” If it’s you asking to guest, or if it’s a team being formed for the tournament and you’re invited you pay for your share. And if you’re invited for a tournament team and not part of their program or club then you typically pay your portion of the tournament fee, and you may have a “guest player” fee for the brand / club if playing under a banner. Those are normal costs. And just because you think little Billy or Susie is one of the top 3 or 4 kids, it doesn’t mean you ride for free. That said, many times the guest player fee is negotiable. There are legitimate reasons for the guest player fee though, so just keep in mind you’re really asking the club to pay it on your behalf, not to “waive” it. |
| Tell her to go and have fun. Play with confidence make new friends and memories. My DC has guest played with other teams and has still remained friends with some of them. |
| My teenage daughter did this with an out of town team and had a blast. The girls on the team were happy to have her (they had some injuries) and were so welcoming. My daughter was nervous about it but then within a few minutes was all smiles. The team was staying at a hotel so the night before the first game we went over to meet them and the coach. It was a great experience |
| How did you all get connected with the out of town teams in order to guest play? |
| There's a very active Facebook guest player group and a second one for keepers only |
Or most the larger tournaments have guest player sign-ups in gotsoccer. My kid has gotten picked up both ways. |
What’s the name of the group if you don’t mind my asking? |
Youth Soccer Guest Playing Opportunities or something very close to that |
And don't ask for your u8/u9 maybe even u10. Everyone thinks their kid at that age is very special. |
