| Is there one poster who has just taken this on? Or are multiple people posting it and it’s whoever gets there first? I’m just curious. |
|
Sometimes me. I am the one who, if I start the thread of the month, I add a few questions, like what is the book about and why did you pick that particular book.
It is not always me though. I don't know if it is just one other person besides me or not. |
Now everyone is going to try to sneak in and be first with that post.
|
I really appreciate when you do this btw. It's so much more interesting with discussion vs. people just listing titles. |
|
I started it when Book club started and did it for about the first 2 -3 months then someone else started doing it.
But I still sometimes ask for the previous month to be closed because no one else seems to remember. |
Oh gosh! I thought the site admin eagerly came to the book club section of DCUM at the beginning of each month to see if a new "what are reading this month" thread had been started so he could lock up the thread for the previous month. I guess us book readers are a pretty low maintenance section of DCUM.

Thanks! The thread for June is the last one I started. One of the questions was "How did you acquire the book?'. At the end of the month i looked at all the responses to that question and I decided that the answers ran the gamut of every way a person could acquire a book. 13 people said Libby. 3 people said Little Free Library 2 people said audible 2 people said Library 2 people said they purchased it new at a book store 2 people said "from my pile" or "from my home bookshelf". 1 person said "it arrived the day after the author died" so I assume it came in the mail to their home. 1 person said pre-ordered. 1 person said purchased on Kindle 1 person said used book sale 1 person said advance copy for review 1 person said a friend loaned them the book. I just thought all the different responses was interesting. I can't think of any other method to acquire a book than those listed, except for if the book was given as a gift. |
I find the thread disappointing sometimes, as there's only pockets of discussion and usually for very populist titles. Some people just list titles and say nothing more. There's really no value in that. |
| Just curious too for the main OP - are you also the Sophie Kinsella fan? |
OP started this thread, not the same person who started the what are you reading posts, which is me. I've never read a Sophie Kinsella book in my life, more likely to read Philip Roth, Charles Dickens etc |
|
NP. FWIW, one of the things I've noticed is that it's more literary readers who post and discuss, and it feels that readers who like popular fiction either get ignored or shut down.
I'm in publishing, so I was curious to see how the Book Club went. One of the most active threads was someone specifically asking about romance novels, or sex in novels, or something related. I don't remember exactly. But it was a longer thread than most. I appreciate any discussion about any books. But as with physical book clubs, there are always the people who keep it alive and thriving, and others who are just happy to be there. |
They're as bad as the posters in Beauty or Entertainment who don't embed pics! |
I am the person who sometimes starts the "what are you reading this month" threads, and I add a few questions to spur discussion. And I am the Sophie Kinsella fan. Well, there seem to other Sophie Kinsella fans on the site besides me, but I have been on a quest this year to read all of her books and I have been giving a little report here each time I finish one. So . . . why did you suspect someone on this thread was the Sophie Kinsella fan?

Eh, I don't know that there is absolutely no value in just posting the title. I mean, on the movies / TV / celebrity gossip section of DCUM, there are probably 500 posts a day. Here in the book club section, there are probably 5 - 10 posts a day. So if someone comes along and posts a book title, it means they are spending some of their leisure time doing something besides watching TV. |
| I am the OP on this thread. I had to check my Goodreads list and it seems I read Shopaholic but only gave it 2 stars and didn't read anything else by her. |
