Given where it pulls from, assume most/many are wealthy. |
The families at Jackson Reed are likely representative of those all over the city as it is the largest public high school in the city. |
It’s a huge mix. I certainly have not seen wealth there like I’ve seen in Sidwell families. |
Eh but a heck of a lot of folks can't afford to move in bounds for it.... myself included |
But many people get in through admittance to one of the feeder schools, at least at this point. |
Or live in apts in-boundary. It’s still a large cachement. |
Really? Which ones... seemed rare and unlikely when I was looking at odds. |
My child goes to JR. We live in a one bedroom apartment down the street with a pre-layoff HHI of 95k (abject poverty by DCUM standards).
|
My son is in 9th grade. He was offered admission to Shepherd Park. If you try all schools that feed to JR all the way through ES for this 9th grade class, chances are good you would have gotten in somewhere at some point. |
Yeah, we busted our budget to move to a run-down place in Mt Pleasant so our kid can go to JR. Not everyone is rich. And though DCUM rarely acknowledges this, kids in some neighborhoods zoned for JR live east (gasp) of the Park. |
It happens all the time. We live EOTP and got in at Hyde Addison last year (though didn't take it), I have several friends in their neighborhood who now attend HA or Mann or Eaton, through the lottery, and have friends who lottery every year just in case they want to move and they get an offer from a JR or MacArthur feeder every year. |
Though now I'm realizing those are all MacArthur feeders and maybe that's why... |
I assume you mean purchase in-boundary R/E. Honestly, there are tons of reasonable apartments along CT Avenue that feed into JR. Not exactly a cool area for renters like Navy Yard or any number of downtown areas, so rents are cheaper. There are a fair number of renters with kids at JR, as well as rank-and-file embassy employees (i.e., these aren't ambassadors or high-level foreign emissaries) who send their kids to DCPS. |
Yup, stoddert has a huge contingent of these. not every country gives rank and file enough to afford sidwell or even BIS/WIS. |
yup. 2 bedrooms in glover park and off new mexico have barely changed in price since 2005. |
