FCYBL- Mclean

Anonymous
DD wants to try out for travel basketball this fall but we keep hearing it will be tough to make. She's not very experienced but has gotten better with some AAU under her belt. Does she stand to make the McLean A or B (if they have it) teams this year? Or are those teams set? 8th grade

She should try out. McLean almost always has two teams per age group, and historically their B teams have had girls with less experience at that age, but who go on to very good HS careers. Plus, sometimes some of the top 8th graders decide not to play FCYBL, so the player pool may not be as deep as 6th/7th grade. I would also recommend trying out for Great Falls, or maybe Falls Church or Vienna depending on your zip code.

Falls Church has an 8th Grade Select league?

Great organization. DD should try it out but be prepared that teams can be set by 8th grade.

They do but they don't form teams for every age group. They have a rule that most of the team has to live in Falls church City, and that limits their ability to put teams together

Falls Church didn't have a team for this age group last year (7th grade girls) so that's not promising.

You could also look into Annandale or Turnpike. They had D2 teams. Hard to say without knowing where you live. Vienna had two teams but both were in Division 1, which is kind of unusual.

OP here. We live on the Falls Church/McLean zone. Annandale could be an option but wouldn't you have to be very good to get a zip code exception?

Not for a team that wasn't very good. They mighr be struggling to put a team together and willing to use their exceptions to get anyone in the door.

All depends. If the AAU team is like Fairfax Stars or Elevate (or a similar type org), make sure the coaches know she is playing for a good AAU organization. It helps.

Agree with others to try out for a few different teams and see where the cards fall. McLean can be tough, as they usually have pretty competitive teams.

OP here. Unfortunately not those teams. It was for a lower tiered team and she did a series of camps this summer.

NP. I have a middle school boy in McLean and can’t find any open gyms for boys basketball. Do they have them for the boys?

McLean hasn't posted any tryout or open gym information for this season yet.

I have just been hearing through friends but DD has never been invited or hasn't felt like she could attend.
