Do you only submit 5s or do you submit 4s to top20 schools?
Do you have a kid who got in with a few 4s? Thank you! |

AP scores are not considered for admission. The grade on the class > optional AP test score on one day. an applicant can input any AP score. Why not put all 5’s!? There is no validation process. Unlike When you self report SAT scores, for example, and the school admits you based on them; your acceptance is contingent upon the school actually receiving the official scores as you reported.
AP scores matter, after admission, if your kid wants to get credit for them. A lot of top schools don’t even give advance placement or class credit for scores, so even after being admitted you would never submit the official ones. |
You are saying that AP scores don't matter and yet suggesting that students lie in their applications. Awfully big chance you'd be taking, since you would be sending the official score report during the summer. You do know what happens to students who are caught lying in the app, yes? |
Submit 4s and 5s to top schools. There is some disagreement in this forum on whether to submit 4s. I don't see a reason not to submit 4s. I have a science major at a T10 who submitted a 4 in calc BC. He also had a 4.0 uw/1550 and submitted three 5s in other subjects. |
This is not accurate for current admissions climate. AP scores are considered in application profile at most top schools. Submit 4s and 5s. I have 2 kids at T 10, one early, one with multiple RD. Both submitted 4s and 5s. |
| Sara Harberson says to only submit 5s to top 20s and lots of people rely on this advice. Most other college counselors say submit all 4s and 5s. |
Above is correct. Check with school- some now saying SAT or AP scores |

OP here.
I have kids (twins) at two different NYC privates. One school's college counselor says to submit the 4s, regardless of subject and planned major. The other says to not submit 4's especially if they're in the subject matter that the kid is hoping to study (i.e. a STEM kid should only submit STEM 5s). I have a kid who received 4's on the Physics C exams (mechanics and E&M) and was hoping to study STEM at a top school (grades and SAT (790 math) support this) but her counselor says not to submit the physics 4 scores. I think it looks weird to just not submit these scores. UGH. |
Your instinct is right. It also signals that the exam was either not taken or a 3,2,1 grade. I would definitely include the 4. |
+1 |
I would definitely submit 4 in Physics C alongside the great SAT score. If on the fence, check the college's AP credit policies for reassurance. Sure, a few will only give credit for 5s, but many top schools do give credit for 4 in Physics C. |
Agreed not submitting looks weird especially if you are submitting other APs. As with test optional this is a situation where not submitting could lead the school to conclude the score was bad. A 4 is not a bad score. And presumably part of an application with many other highlights. Submit it. |

I would because these schools, in particular, have made clear that they really care about test scores. They all give long-winded reasons for returning to test-required, but it seems pretty clear that they see test scores as helpful for sorting/validation among huge applicant pools. And while the requirements are officially about SAT/ACT scores, it also seems to me that a bunch of AP classes without scores would not be viewed favorably in this environment at those schools.
(To be clear, I’m not defending this position; I think test optional is the right answer. But I do think the top 20 schools have made their preferences clear and that it’s silly to ignore those preferences if you’re going to apply to these schools.) |

Is there a way to submit some AP scores but not others? I thought it was all or nothing?
DD has three 5s so far (but taking many more APs this year and next) and would love to submit those. |
You can submit whatever scores you want. All, some, none. |
