novels and other readings

Do all MS students read same novels? Who decides on titles? In MS and HS, is it differentiated by reading levels?

What's on the list this year?

The possible novels are listed in the Study Sync guide for each grade.

This includes the possiblity of the enriched novel studies, which are included toward the end. You. need to talk to your school's leadership to figure out which novels they are using and to push them to add lit circles in addition to the core novel studies.

My son had a teacher at Whitman recently who chose not to use classic texts which were overtly racist or misogynistic. So he gave the class Flowers for Algenon to read instead of Of Mice & Men.

I thought this was terrific BTW as did my DS.

Are they STILL using 'OM&M' in HSs?!

Yes. They actually just revised the curriculum and included OMAM as one of the main texts of Quarter 2. The unit is called “What Voices are Left Out.” Students have to read and then research the marginalized voices from the Great Depression Era

My MS kid is reading the Red Umbrella now. Never heard of it, but kid says it's a good book. Not sure what's on the syllabus for the rest of the year or to what extent the books differ across classes/schools since everyone is in "advanced" English anyway.

My kid read it in 'Honors' English 9 in 2023.

Just to put it in perspective, that's one of the more challenging texts in the updated 'honors' English 9 curriculum.

You know that English Literature goes way back, right? Ever heard of Chaucer?
He wrote the Cantebury Tales in the 1380s. And yes, it is still studied the world over!

Wot a moron.

But not in MCPS, at least so far in our experience.

I suppose the same people who object to Of Mice and Men also think The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a racist book.

Last year my reluctant reader, who is a boy, was given the book Last Night at the Telegraph Club. He had no interest in reading a novel about a girl who realizes she is a lesbian. The teacher purposely stuck it to him even though that was his last choice of books, among other choices she offered to the class. She pushed her agenda.

You sound close minded. Reading by nature involves learning about an experience that isn't identical to our own. That you consider this pushing an agenda makes you sound bigoted.

+1 Yes, boys should only read books about boys, girls about girls, Christians should only read Christian themed books. That's what the school curriculum should mandate.
