I am a miserable teacher

Anonymous
I am a HS teacher in MCPS. Going into year 15. This job becomes less and less desirable every year. I can retire before age 60 is the only thing keeping me going. I have a Masters +60 and I make considerably less than just about everyone I know, and many of these people don’t have a college degree at all, and they work remote or hybrid.
Before anyone points out that I have summers off, I actually don’t. I work in the summer and the weeks I’m not working, I don’t get paid. It’s like everyone else’s annual leave but other jobs get paid year round.
I like my school and our Admin for most part, but lately I’m questioning why I spent so much time and money to become an educator. Yes, I love working with kids, but I’m also tired of struggling financially. I live in Moco and I’m a single parent.

Mmm hmm. So, given what you told us you are at somewhere between 80k and 90k per year and you are rambling about "I don't get paid" in the summer? Ok. Lol.

So, you make $95-100K, plus whatever your summer job gets you.

You don't seem to know a lot of government employees, or people with liberal arts degrees if you don't think that is good.

Don't get me wrong, I think teaching is a hard job, and the hours are long. But the pay is quite competitive to similar jobs/sectors.

How many people with Master's degree only make $80-90k after 15 yrs?

A lot!
How many (excluding government workers) can retire before 60? Not many!

Are you kidding me? A large number of government employees and people at non-profits.

Also, don't compare a MEd to a MS in a STEM program.

Do you tutor? People who have a masters and tutor make BANK.

+1 Take a look at government salaries-they don't have your generous vacation time allocation and many will be lower. The DC area has the highest percentage of people with master's degrees.

You also get a pension.

OP are you looking for advice on getting a different job or do you want to rant?

I'm an ex-teacher. You started teaching just when smart phones and social media were picking up steam. No wonder your job is harder now.

Too much time on Dcum has warped your sense of typical salaries. A $90k teaching salary means about a $100k annual salary including summer employment. That puts you in a similar pay bracket to professional medical staff, like mid-level providers in primary care, or physical and occupational therapists.

Huh??
What world are you living in? A lot of people
DCUM is so out of touch with reality

Yes. It's hard to tell what posts are just trolling.

Your problem is that you're a single parent living in MoCo. Teaching is not the problem.

No..
Teaching is the problem. Many of the mcps educators are miserable and there are terrible morale issues. You are not alone OP I'm just not sure what you can do about it...you may be stuck due to finances
