Number of rooms for family of 5

How many rooms should a house have for a family of 5 to live comfortably? 1 primary, 3 bedrooms for each kid, 1 office for working- thats’s 5 bedrooms already and it’s just the basics.

Can't any of the kids share a bedroom?

Is that fair to the kids as they get older? Not having any privacy?

You can live comfortably in a 4 bedroom house. You can live well in a house with more rooms - add in an office, gym, guest room, etc.

5-6 bedrooms plus a dedicated office.

Firstly, they can have privacy. Secondly, yes it's fair for kids to share bedrooms. It's been happening since the dawn of time.

I was one of seven kids. I didn’t have my own room until the two oldest went to college. All seven of us shared one bathroom. Privacy?

Some people work at the kitchen table or in the family room. It just depends on your budget.

We have young kids and are comfortable in a 3 bed/3 bath but intend on buying a new home in the next few years and will be looking for a 4+ bed/3+ bath place. Ideally, we’d like a place with 4 beds on the same floor and a finished basement with a guest bedroom

Seriously? A 3BR should be fine unless someone works FT from home (would really need a dedicated office space). Plus kitchen/dining area + living room and 1-2 baths.

I grew up in a family of 6 in a 3BR/1BA and it was fine. small ranch but we had an awesome yard and unfinished basement that we fixed up over time.

I have 3 DC in a 4BR/2.5BA. It is much nicer than what I grew up with (besides the yard) but we would be fine in something a bit smaller as well

Yes it is

This is a stupid question. The answer will depend on your budget and what living style you want.
If every kid gets their own room a 4 bed house is fine. Most houses this size have an office space on the main level. I would also give up a formal Sitting room that never gets used and made that an office. I don’t like wasted space that just gets filled up with furniture you don’t need and more clutter.

4 bedrooms is fine whether it is 1 master plus 3 kid rooms or 1 master plus 2 kid rooms plus 1 office.

We have 7 bedrooms plus office plus music room plus media room. We don’t need all the rooms. It is good when we host guests 1-2x per year.

We're a family of five in 4,500 sq feet and we use every inch of our house.

3 bedrooms for each kid? Why would a kid need three bedrooms?
Your math is wrong.
