Inclusion #s in HS

Anonymous
Special education teachers in more than one HS have classes sizes 30+ with 20+ being students with IEPs. Is anyone else experiencing this? 15 years ago, there were limits. I seem to remember no more than 8 IEPS could be in one inclusion class. I guess times have changed. Is this another casualty of budget cuts?

MCPS is a sh#t show. There is no accountability at all with the BOE or central office and their spending is out of control so there is no money for student needs.

When everyone is on an IEP, IEP is gen ed, and gets gen ed class sizes.

I've never heard of an inclusion class with that many IEP students, but in inclusion classes you almost always have a second or even third teacher so 30 students divided by 2 or 3 is a good class size. DD was in an inclusion class last semester just by random chance and she knew a lot of the kids in the class and only about 4-5 had any kind of special needs. They did have two teachers. I don't know how large the class size was exactly though. She never complained of any issues.

Our daughter has an IEP but does not require the support of a second teacher. I wouldn’t over assume all IEP students create a huge burden on the teacher that somehow detracts from the education of other students.

Learning alongside non disabled peers is one of the stated goals of the LRE in the IDEA and it's offensive and disgraceful to suggest there is anything wrong with asking for that. A classroom with 30 kids of which only 8 do not have IEPs is not consistent with the spirit of the IDEA and in some states would simply not legally qualify as being LRE for those kids.

MCPS has been doing this for years. They called it the collaborative class at our school and forced all kids in it with IEP's regardless of why. The curriculum was slower. We had to fight to get out of it which meant dropping the IEP.

If your child is in a class with 20 out of 30 kids having IEPs I would file a complaint. The classes do move slower.

Our NT DD was in such a class first semester last year and there were no issues getting the teacher's attention or behavioral issues from the students. It did move very slowly.

The next semester she was in a non-inclusion class had the teacher who had a reputation for being a strong teacher but very demanding and it was night and day in terms of the academics.

I’m the parent of that kid with the IEP. It’s not working on our side of the classroom either.

MCPS has a one size fits no one approach to special education: mainstream with minimal support. The more kids you can pack into a room the better…

Not all kids with IEPs need to go slow… mine has ASD and a high IQ, it’s the other stuff that they struggle with…

What did you end up doing, PP? Did you drop the inclusion class? The expectations for the inclusion class at our school are really low.
