Our daughter has an IEP but does not require the support of a second teacher. I wouldn’t over assume all IEP students create a huge burden on the teacher that somehow detracts from the education of other students.
Learning alongside non disabled peers is one of the stated goals of the LRE in the IDEA and it's offensive and disgraceful to suggest there is anything wrong with asking for that. A classroom with 30 kids of which only 8 do not have IEPs is not consistent with the spirit of the IDEA and in some states would simply not legally qualify as being LRE for those kids.
MCPS has been doing this for years. They called it the collaborative class at our school and forced all kids in it with IEP's regardless of why. The curriculum was slower. We had to fight to get out of it which meant dropping the IEP.
