Travel Discussion
| My husband and I are actually going! I can't believe it happened. We are going kid free and I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for places to hit! We have 5 days and I am soooooooo excited to see the art! If anyone has any "do not misses" please let me know. TIA |
| We had a lovely stay at the Hotel Pulitzer! |
|
I stayed at the Pulitzer many years ago and also liked it. I'd heard great things about the Canal House but it was full.
Do not miss the Anne Frank House. |
We too will be visiting Amsterdam shortly. We will be taking our children with us and as PP suggested, we will be visting the Anne Frank House. They have both read her diary and this visit will make their reading a more tangible experience. |
| I'm another poster who stayed at the Pulitzer and loved it. The place to be, I guess! They have a boat that will take you for a ride along the canals. (You can catch similar boats other places in the city, but this was more intimate.) If you're looking for art, visit the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh. Anne Frank House is very emotional. Climb to the top of Westerkerk church for a nice view. I love Amstelkring - the church in the attic - but I think it's currently being restored (although is still open). Get out to the countryside to see Delft and Madurodam (Holland in miniature). |
| We had a great trip and went to the Van Gogh museum, Rijksmuseum, and Anne Frank House. If you willl be going in the spring, I highly recommend a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens--it was absolutely amazing. For a great place to stay, we rented a houseboat from vrbo -- there are several rental houseboats listed but here is the link to the boat where we stayed http://www.vrbo.com/19247. It was gorgeous and a wonderful and unique experience. |

We stayed here when DH and I went for a week a few years back and it was wonderful.
http://www.americanhotelofamsterdam.com/ Despite its name, it's a historic building constructed in 1900 and right in the heart of Leidseplein - a great location and beautiful hotel. |
|
PP here - my apologies for my lack of reading comprehension...you didn't ask for where to stay!! lol
I too would recommend the major museums, the Anne Frank house, a boat tour of the canals, a few cafes, a "pancake house," and if you like jazz there's a great place called I think Cafe Alto with live music and good beer. We thought about renting bikes while there but then thought we'd also like to return home not in traction. |
| Fabulous! Thank you all! I am really looking forward to it. |
| Sounds fantastic! My husband and I did a 4-day trip to Amsterdam without kids and had a great time. Make sure to hit an Indonesian restaurant and have the rijstafel (oh, can't remember how you spell it, it's the rice table which comes with a zillion little sampler dishes, all delicious). Dutch people are friendly and amazing. Buy tulip bulbs - there are some you can buy that will clear customs. We love ours! |
| Another vote for the Pulitzer. Great location and lovely private garden for pre-dinner drinks. Foods: Ristafel, fries (served with garlic mayo or peanut sauce--yum), and dutch pancakes. I would highly recommend renting bikes and sightseeing that way--you can cover a lot of ground and see the city the way the natives do. |
| I used to spend a lot of time in the netherlands, but its been years. You must see Rijksmuseum, eat food from the street venders, go out to the dyks, visits Moellendam, Edam ... sorry- running late, I'll try to add more later. |
| Another fun event is Boom Chicago, a Second City-style improv group group. |
| Ditto on Indonesian food. We went kid-free a few years back and had a FABULOUS time - enjoy! |
| The Heineken Museum is a LOT of fun. Seriously. |
