lol - APS bus stop is comically bad

Anonymous
They moved our stop an additional mile away, and our kid now gets to cross a six lane road to get there! It’s high school so I assume they don’t care (it’s a mile and a half total, which I assume is technically within the distance parameters). So much easier to just drive the poor kid to and from school.

I understand, but also consider that I think APS is far over budget, and high school kids are in reality less needful of bus transport than elementary and middle schoolers. High schoolers can take a public bus too (it's free I think, you can get a pass from the county?). I took public transport to my private high school my whole life tbh, in another state.

Not saying this is great, just that if APS is cutting somewhere maybe this isn't the worst place, and busses are expensive.

If the whole trip is 1.5 miles, can they bike in?

Did you miss the 6 lanes road? We have a 2 mile rule, so no buses in MCPS and it sucks as we have to drive as they'd have to cross two dangerous roads and a big chunk of the walk is no sidewalks.

MCPS rule is no bus for high school-ers unless more than 2 miles away. Lots of kids ride metro bus or Ride-on bus for free.

Oh I get it, I just think they should have sent a letter telling us we don’t get a bus this year because they lack sufficient resources to provide transportation for our neighborhood. Instead they pretend to have given us transportation. It’s annoying. Also, a little heads up that they were taking away our transportation would have been great for planning purposes.

It’s 1.5 to the bus stop, but much further to the school. Not sure there’s anywhere for them to lock up their bikes at the stop. And yeah, super dangerous spot for a kid to be riding his bike regardless.

Is this a hub stop for an option school? If so, I would look at the hub stop map (in the letter on parentvue) and see if there’s another stop your child could use. Even if it’s not closer, it might be a safer walking/biking route?

They've set up the hub bus stops so they're all at major buildings, which means they're also on very busy roads that kids have to cross. If APS moved them to be in the middle of neighborhoods instead, kids would have to cross far fewer major roads to get to their hub stop, and they'd have to wait on less busy streets.

You must not live in Arlington. I can’t imagine what 6 lane road they are talking about except maybe Langston, which as had stoplights crosswalks every quarter mile or so.

They can’t do that because state requires they provide transport and thus you would have grounds to sue.

+1 totally ok for a high school student.

I thought the OP was referring to Route 50

That is the dividing line of Arlington— I assumed she would have named it as a highway not a road. There are under / overpasses on Glebe, George Mason and Carlin Spring.

The only scenario that would be is if she lives in Glen Carlin neighborhood on the bottom left, but even then crossing 50 is with the underpass on Carlin Springs.

Sorry here’s the map. https://www.apsva.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/57/2024/08/HS_Boundaries_SY24_25_V2.pdf

If she is attending WL from the only section south of 50? Now if they have no bus service south of 50 for that entire neighborhood that would be scandalous.
