Hi there, we recently moved to fairfax county and my 6th grader is not in advanced math or AAP program. And this will make him in-eligeable to take IAAT in January, as i understand. Can anyone help me understand, what are lost opportunities in the middle school and high school if so? and if there is any way around?
I also learned from back to school night yesterday that they are taking math assessment today and Monday and these two tests may determine if he is eligeble for advanced math. Is there any study materials around for this weekend? Thanks a lot! |

You child is not eligible to take the IAAT or the 7th grade sol because your child is taking 6th grade math and the progression is from 6th grade math to 7th grade math not from 6th grade math to algebra. If your child wants to skip 7th grade math, they can enroll in math honors 7 which is 8th grade math.
The study materials for the assessments are 6th grade math, because placing your kid in advanced math means they skip 6th grade. Most schools will not do that |

Your best bet would be to report this post and ask Jeff (moderator) to move it to the AAP forum, or perhaps FCPS.
I assume your child is taking the iReady in math. At our school a score greater than the 90th percentile will move your child to advanced math. Any kid in advanced math takes the IAAT and math 7 SOL. Those two things together qualify your child (with the right scores) for Algebra 1 honors in 7th. If your child takes math 7 honors in 7th and Algebra 1 honors in 8th, DC can still take summer geometry to skip ahead a year and rejoin the track that peers taking Algebra 1 honors in 7th are on. There are lots of ways to accelerate in math as needed, so I wouldn't freak out. |

Thank you so much!!!
Will Russina math school or AOPS be a good idea? I heard lots of 5th/6th grader in AAP in haycock took it.

| Math 7 Honors is open enrollment, so if your child is strong in math but not in AAP, I would make that your goal. My experience is a limited number of kids from AAP score high enough to take Algebra in 7th anyway. You can still be on honors track and take high-level courses (AP, IB) by taking Algebra in 8th. |
At our ES in the Woodson pyramid AOPS and Russian School of Math were not common. DD's one good friend who took it would have been far ahead of even the advanced math class regardless - it was just an activity her family encouraged. If your kid is bored in math or likes math, sure. Otherwise, I'd focus out-of-school time on other things. FCPS is actually decently strong in math, and they do a pretty good job of matching kids' current abilities with classes, especially now that so many ES-es are opening up advanced math enrollment to more kids. |
Your first hurdle is convincing the school to let your kid skip 6th grade math. Advanced math in 6th grade is 7th grade math. The curriculum condenses third, fourth, and fifth grade math so that 4 years are covered in 3. 6th grade advanced math starts with the assumption that they kid has already completed 6th grade math. |

All that Advanced Math/ AAP math in 6th grade does is give you child a chance to test into Algebra 1 H in 7th grade. If they don’t take Algebra 1 H in 7th, then they can take it in 8th and that is fine.

| Unless your child is highly gifted in math, do not worry about this or make a big deal about it with your kid. There is no problem with where they are now. |
