I assume your child is taking the iReady in math. At our school a score greater than the 90th percentile will move your child to advanced math. Any kid in advanced math takes the IAAT and math 7 SOL. Those two things together qualify your child (with the right scores) for Algebra 1 honors in 7th.

If your child takes math 7 honors in 7th and Algebra 1 honors in 8th, DC can still take summer geometry to skip ahead a year and rejoin the track that peers taking Algebra 1 honors in 7th are on. There are lots of ways to accelerate in math as needed, so I wouldn't freak out.[/quote][/quote]

At our ES in the Woodson pyramid AOPS and Russian School of Math were not common. DD's one good friend who took it would have been far ahead of even the advanced math class regardless - it was just an activity her family encouraged. If your kid is bored in math or likes math, sure. Otherwise, I'd focus out-of-school time on other things. FCPS is actually decently strong in math, and they do a pretty good job of matching kids' current abilities with classes, especially now that so many ES-es are opening up advanced math enrollment to more kids.[/quote]
