Tenleytown surprisingly sketchy?

Anonymous
My family and I are looking at homes in upper NW but I’m somewhat surprised, why is Tenleytown surprisingly sketchy? Made multiple trips over the last few weeks - multiple drunk homeless folks yelling, saw someone peeing in the middle of the day, etc. I expected with so many multimillion dollar homes in the area that the “town” center would be much nicer.

I live off H St currently, which has its own issues for sure, but frankly we wanted to leave as I’m tired of walking past all manner of sketch with my toddler.

It also seems surprisingly grimy - few trees, lots of ugly concrete, etc.

Because of the metro and concentration of stores, schools, restaurants. Don't like it? Many other neighborhoods to pick from.

I would definitely look in Woodley Park or Cleveland Park if you're looking for a suburban setting that is w/in DC lines.

I want the metro and concentration of stores/schools/restaurants though - otherwise I'd leave for the burbs. The restaurants aren't exactly the best, but I wouldn't have thought that the small concentration of urban density way outside of the city core would be like it is.

Drunk AU students stumbling into Steak & Egg?

Just exactly where in this area did you witness all of this ?

are you looking to live in one of the apartment buildings? otherwise most of your day will be in the tree lined streets in the neighborhoods

the area right outside the metro isn't fantastic but we're not really hanging out over there. the stores in that particular strip are very suburban - panera, chik fil a, etc. we stick to other parts of the hood - near muchas gracias, or go down toward cathedral commons.

That’s why I prefer my area of Cathedral Heights. But if you want to be right near the metro, that’s the vibe. Same on Connecticut.

Right outside of the metro station and in front of the chic-fil-a.

Not in apartment - I guess I had somewhat expected that Tenleytown would function as sort of what Eastern Market does to that part of the Hill - central location for eating/shopping/etc but that might not be the case here.

Eastern Market serves that function because proper Cap Hill is not otherwise near anything. There’s a ton of eating all the way up and down Wisconsin.

I haven't been to Eastern Market in ages, but there used to be several homeless outside the station and tons of sketch outside that CVS.

This part of town has small pockets where folks go - Cleveland Park strip, Muchas Gracias/Rosemary Thyme strip, Spring Valley - I would not call Tenley a center in the same way as Eastern Market.
