Winston Churchill High School Families and Community:

I am extremely disappointed to report to you that our building was vandalized by hate-based graffiti overnight. Our marque and front entrance were defaced with graffiti bearing politically charged, hate-bias language. Similar vandalism has occurred at a few other schools in Montgomery County. We work hard to ensure our school is a safe place for all students, staff, and visitors and this type of vandalism and hate bias incidents are an affront to our efforts and goes against our school and district values in every sense.

As soon as we were made aware of the vandalism. We took the following actions:

Contacted our Montgomery County Police partners and the MCPS Office of School Security to report the incident and to commit our support in any investigative effort they take.
Deployed our maintenance teams to immediately remove the graffiti and clean the areas that have been defaced.
Followed the MCPS Guidelines for addressing Hate-Bias.
Our agreed upon WCHS core values clearly state that we will “embrace and celebrate” all people and cultures in our school. As a No Place for Hate school, we work hard to educate our students about the negative impact of hateful and hurtful words and symbols. We do not, and will not, tolerate bigotry, antisemitism, or racism of any kind at Winston Churchill. It is imperative that we recognize the emotional harm actions like this can have for our students, staff and visitors. We will continue to address this important topic in upcoming anti-hate and anti-bias lessons and campaigns in conjunction with our staff and student leaders. If your student needs to speak with someone about this issue immediately, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your school administrator or counselor.

Montgomery County Public Schools is proud of our community’s diversity. We are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive environment where all students, staff, and caregivers feel safe, valued, seen, heard and have a sense of belonging. Incidents such as this are a community issue requiring a community response - we must come together to recognize and embrace our differences and not let them divide us.

We have included links to resources that can support having conversations with your children:

NASP - Resources for Supporting Youth Affected by the Violence in Israel and Gaza
Discussing Hate and Violence with Children
I will continue to update the community on the actions we are taking as more information comes to me. Should you have any questions or need support, you can reach me at john_taylor@mcpsmd.org.

Sincerely,

John Taylor - Principal

Don’t schools have cameras?

We got the same email. My kid is at sports practice right now and I am going to ask them about it when they return. How sickening. Unfortunately, I have heard of other less in the open incidents. What is wrong with people? It's so discouraging to grow up in a world where we hear and learn "things are getting better" then watch your own children see things you didn't see yourself.

They won’t state the political message. They also said it involved swastikas and homophobic messages

I saw a photo of one and it said “Israel bombs schools “ so this will get swept under the carpet and if anyone caught , restorative justice

This happened this morning. The schools cleaned it up. Police are investigating.

We got the same letter at Wootton. It’s always the same disappointing canned response to anti-semitism and nothing is ever done.

What can be done if they don't know who vandalized the school?

If they only had camera's....

Teens know adults are driven crazy by graffiti. What they have passion about is seldom a particular cause. It's much more about what current issue will create the greatest outrage for the adults around them.

At Bethesda ES, it was done on the sign out by the street. Any building-mounted cameras may not show much (the sign would obscure anyone). I wonder if the vandals were stupid enough not to wear hoodies and face masks or other disguise.

Was it spray paint, or they did more than that? In MD, if the property damage is < $500, then it's a misdemeanor with maximum 60-day jail sentence and $500 fine. Typical sentence is community service and paying restitution for graffiti though.
