| Dc got a 260 in compacted Math in 5th grade and finished 7th grade Math this summer on Khan Academy. Before anyone jumps on me, kid did it because of boredom. I've been telling DC not to go ahead since DC might be bored in middle school but well, kid likes it. Kid is not in any other paid Math enrichment. What would be an appropriate placement in 6th grade? Whom should we talk to? |
| Aim or algebra |
|
AIM would be the placement I would expect. What was he recommended for?
260 is not overly high and KHAN does not replace a class, but I think he will be well set-up to soar in pre-algebra! |
| Probably AMP7+ now, which is the newer accelerated course before Algebra I. |
|
Op here. We don't know yet what DC was recommended for. I checked the school website and saw that the school offers AMP6+, AMP7+ in 6th grade for the advanced track in 6th grade. In 7th they offer AMP 7+, Math 8, Algebra 1* . In 8th grade they offer Algebra 1* and Honors Geometry.
I do not know what all this is. |
In this case 7+ sounds right. |
That sounds right. If you really wanted to push, Algebra but AIM may help reinforce foundational skills. It isn't a race. |
Yes. So the pathway would be: AMP7+ in 6th Algebra 1 in 7th Honors Geometry in 8th |
| Go on AoPS and do the free enrichment stuff for pre algebra and algebra, number theory and counting. That will be interesting and challenging and avoid the lopsidedness of pushing ahead in MAP/Khan grade-level content with no depth or breadth. |
The number theory and counting won't matter for MCPS. It's great stuff but largely not part of the curriculum. |
How does AMP7+ compare to AIM? Is it dumbed down? |
| In my experience, the AMP classes tend to have a more cohesive curriculum, whereas AIM jumped around. But it may be the teacher, YMMV. |
Second AoPS. If you have a mathy kid and don't want to fight the school to get algebra in 6th then competition math is a very useful brain bending outlet. |
It’s just offered by a different curriculum provider. |
What is AoPS? |
