Who has gotten their teacher assignments/class lists

First time at dcps for kindergarten, and even though I don't know many people or the teachers I really want to know 🫣 So now I'm just curious when you usually hear from the schools

Whittier posted on their IG that class assignments went out last week. My son (now in DCPS HS) went to Haynes in elementary and we got it the week teachers went back. I would imagine most places do it the week teachers go back at the latest.

You will get them quite late. There is a lot of wait-list changes, kids coming and going, and they need to balance the classes in various ways. So they delay to have the most up to date info.

Our school said “on or before August 21”
I’m sure they get families waiting til the last minute to register, so it impacts class rosters etc.

Our school said they will send them after Aspen finishes rolling over on August 9th.

Per our school principal, the earlier parents have the list the more time you have to deal with them complaining about it. So just a few days before school starts.

If you do have a good reason, like an IEP reason, you can ask.

Ha, this actually makes complete sense to me, and I commend them for it, I would not want to deal with many parents today. We have no IEP, it's just pure curiosity on my part and I know one person that got their kinder list (not our school obviously) so wondered if that was typical or not

As a former PTA president who heard so many people wanting to change rooms for all kinds of minor reasons (often not even accurate!) I agree. If you open the door to that, there's no end of it. And if each class has to have a rough balance of ages, boy/girl, academic ability, and behaviors, then it's a jigsaw puzzle to create the lists. Plus the kids who have speech or ELL or other service providers, you have to create a schedule that does not double-book your therapists. To think all that through and then have to re-do it because Larla wants to be with her bestie-of-the-moment would be unmanageable.

But if you do have a compelling need, especially one that was not apparent in the spring, definitely do advocate for your kid. It's just not an open door to any kid for any reason.

Whittier released class lists on July 26. I’m sure some parents have complained.

Perhaps naive question, but what do/can DCPS provide in terms of the names of other kids in the classes/contact info for parents/guardians?

They likely won't give it to you without people's consent. At the start of the year they may do an opt-in list or Google group or something.

My public elementary school (Northern California) posted class lists the night before or two nights before at school in a window. I am sure no one does this anymore, but it was such fun to go see and lots of people would go to see. It was like a mini-before school party. I enjoyed it as a kid at least. LOL.
