Have a son that is heading back to college for his second year.
He loved his freshman year -- maybe too much. Academics did not go well for him. Ended the year with barely over a 2.0 GPA. We are paying for his college, and want to put some "requirements" in place for him to take his next year more seriously and do better. What is realistic? Should it be that he has to earn a certain GPA, or he has to pay a portion of the fees? What is a realistic GPA expectation before that kicks in? Should it be that he has to pay a certain amount for C grades or lower? A combination of the two? I know everyone's situation is different, but I would be curious how others have handled this. Thanks. |
| I would be more involved in caring about his major - whether it's appropriate, and his mental health. |

OP here to PP here --
He is switching majors. That said, his low grades were in general, intro classes. And, yes, I hear you about the mental health aspect, which is why I'm trying not to jump at a hard-and-fast "you must get x GPA". That said, I still feel like he needs some clear expectations, so I'm looking for a little advice on what that should, realistically, be. |
| 3.0 |
depends what school it is and how far below average it is. most schools have an academic probation cutoff that is higher than this so then the kid would have to get off academic prob to continue. First priority as a parent would be see if there are mental health issues or a drug or drinking problem, IF this is at a school where low-2s GPA is the bottom 10-15%. (Bottom 20% at many schools is 3.0 these days, median around 3.6, higher at most ivies/T10) |
| My kids have scholarships that require a gpa of 3.75 to continue the gift. I’d make this point, and say he must make 3.0 or 3.5 to continue to receive gift. If he gets lower than a b- or c, then he must pay for those credits. |
| Has he been admitted into a major? I would be worried there is no major that will accept him. |
| OP here. School is JMU. |
| JMU? 2.0? Not good OP, he slept through all his classes and basically didn’t go to college. |
| We told ours Bs or better. Otherwise he can not do great at a cheaper school closer to home. |
Minimum 3.0. I worked my way through college (worked way too many hours) and commuted (almost 1 hour each way) to a school like JMU, and I managed to get a 3.45. I didn't have time to study much; I barely studied for my finals. But, I managed it. |
+1. Of course OP wants to keep up appearances, so the lazy kid gets another year of $35,000 spring break. Unreal. |

2.0 is C’s
C’s get degrees So c’s |
