Have a son that is heading back to college for his second year. He loved his freshman year -- maybe too much. Academics did not go well for him. Ended the year with barely over a 2.0 GPA. We are paying for his college, and want to put some "requirements" in place for him to take his next year more seriously and do better. What is realistic? Should it be that he has to earn a certain GPA, or he has to pay a portion of the fees? What is a realistic GPA expectation before that kicks in? Should it be that he has to pay a certain amount for C grades or lower? A combination of the two? I know everyone's situation is different, but I would be curious how others have handled this. Thanks.
depends what school it is and how far below average it is. most schools have an academic probation cutoff that is higher than this so then the kid would have to get off academic prob to continue. First priority as a parent would be see if there are mental health issues or a drug or drinking problem, IF this is at a school where low-2s GPA is the bottom 10-15%. (Bottom 20% at many schools is 3.0 these days, median around 3.6, higher at most ivies/T10)
