Girl on period

Question if your daughters still go to practice or meets when on period, even on those heavy flow days? Is it bad if parents prefer them to take absence on a monthly basis during those days?

That’s why tampons were invented

How old? What level of swim?

I would let my kid skip if she had debilitating cramps, but otherwise I made my swimmer know that tampons are safe and she got used to them (reluctantly). I worry that letting a kid sit out for her period will just set up a lifetime of feeling sorry for herself one week a month.

Pain is different—help her manage the pain, or talk to a GYN if flow is unmanageable.

My just turned 12yo still goes. Her flow is not that heavy when compared to an adult but she’s had her period for 2 years now.
She has period swimwear and wears that under her one piece. It’s a bikini style bottom so hides well. She’s not interested in tampons yet and I’m ok with that.

+1

What’s the rationale for letting her skip, absent debilitating cramps? Periods are annoying, but mostly manageable - and she’ll need to learn how to do so.

My 13 year old attends practice. I think she figures she has to learn how to swim through it. She wouldn’t want to miss a meet, for example, so best get practice dealing.

Unless she’s vomiting (which does unfortunately happen due to endometriosis) my 17 yo has always gone to practice/meets. I’d be ok with her skipping if she really felt the need, but see no reason why *I* would have a preference for her staying home. If anything, I prefer the opposite!

I have a 12yo and have been trying to figure this situation out for her too, because she cannot yet figure out tampons (she has tried). Do you have a link to the bikini style period swim bottoms? Those sound like they could be just what we are looking for.

Yes, she goes.

Why would a parent prefer that?

Why would you do that, especially if she is ok going?

Who said tampons are safe? They aren’t regulated by the FDA. Period bathing suits when the flow isn’t too heavy are the only answer.

I highly recommend a Nook surgeon if the endo has gotten that bad

Wow.
Also, those suits use chemicals that are of questionable safety. I’ll take my chances with tampons, thanks.

She goes. Tampons. There is prescription cramp medication for people who have really bad cramps. I took it for a few years in my 20s and it was very effective but l don’t remember the name - it’s a blue pill. As with many things hormonal, these issues can vary a lot over time.
