Horrible dorm assignment!

Anyone else less than enthused about their DC dorm placement? Mine wanted a roommate and wound up in a single basement dorm next to the bathroom without AC in CA at college that can more than afford to put central AC in. Beyond pissed for the amount of tuition and desire for roommate. Souring us on the school before we even arrive!

I mean, too bad about the roommate, but some dorms dont have AC. you can find that out before you apply.

I'm sorry, OP! How much are you paying for the room, do you know?

Lots of schools have dorms without AC. It will be an issue for maybe a couple of warm weeks. Get a fan, open the windows. Some students have to get the basement rooms. Luck of the draw.

Stay positive with your kid. They will absorb your attitude about it. People have probably been living in that room for decades and have been just fine.

Focus on the exciting stuff - picking out bedding, some decoration, etc.

the freshman dorms at my daughter's college just don't have AC and the dorms are pretty lousy. It is what it is.

My kid will be in a triple, so a single would be nice.

So many kids would kill for a single. Find the college incoming freshman group on whatever social platform they use and offer a swap.

People lived without air conditioning for thousands of years. Your snowflake will survive.

Studies done *on college students* show that sleeping in temperatures that are too warm cause lower math scores on tests. Authors compared math scores from students in dorms with A/C and dorms without.

So this is academically important. A/C is not a frivolous demand these days.

This is Southern CA folks so your blithe attitude about AC is unfounded. School can more than afford to provide it too. The basement part is what gets me the most-how a school of this caliber can get away with throwing kids in a dungeon and pretending that’s ok is beyond me!

It's a couple weeks of warm. I had an unairconditioned dorm along with most of the rest of the country back in the 80. I still managed to not fail calculus. And basements are cooler anyway.

OP said basement, so no window fan or open windows if they care about safety. I wouldn't care about the singles part, but the basement part would infuriate me. If it's a private school and you're full pay call

U cannot open a window in a basement dorm nor sneak in illegal AC.
