Just found out today we are moving to North Chevy Chase in August. Our kid is a competitive swimmer for a team in Northern VA, and we want to find a decent team close by (something somewhat competitive, but not high level elite). I see we missed tryouts for RMSC. BCC-YMCA seems close by, but I'm not sure if its a step back, it seems like it isn't that competitive. I know NCAP is always an option, but that seems too big.
Any recommendations for teams in the area we could either still try-out for or transfer to for the upcoming year? Anyone know if BCC-YMCA is any good? |
What about ASA? |
The problem with the YMCA competition is that their meets are only against other YMCA’s so they tend to be farther that USA swimming competitions. My son did it one season then switched to ASA and later RMSC. I’d try ASA, Team Tollefson and DC Wave. |
I think that if you’re transferring, you can email the coaches with times & see if they will accept them. I know RMSC Rockville did that. Maybe they make you attend a practice first but I wouldn’t think you’d need to do a formal try-out. |

Can you specify this a little bit more? If you consider YMCA an option, ASA can be too competitive but they are somewhat less so to NCAP or RMSC. There are many swimmers in ASA from NCC area. For summer team CCRA should be a natural choice but I believe there is a long waitlist. |
I know nothing about the Y, just proximity, but based on what I am reading he wants something much more competitive. ASA looks about the level he is seeking (thanks for the rec all), but it looks like they are full. Also, is it just me, or are clubs way more expensive in MD over VA? |
Try Tollefson or ASA. Will you be at the NCC pool for summer swim? Better get on the waiting list now. |
Contact the coach at ASA. If your kid is good, they will take him. He can do a private tryout. |
I’m getting on. I heard that due to the size of the waiting list it’s likely we will only get a 2nd half membership next year, meaning no swim team ![]() |
How old is your child? Tollefson is an executive choice for kids 14 and under and their lanes won’t be as full |
Unfortunately that’s probably true and I don’t know any way around it. Sorry OP! |
If you can't get into NCC next year, you could always explore summer swim options at one of the MoCo public pools as a stopgap. |
Look at rock creek. Nice pool Nearby. |
Rock Creek also has a long waitlist. It took us almost 5 years to get full summer swim privileges (just got them for this summer). |
I think Rock Creek's boundaries don't overlap with NCC boundaries, so if you are eligible for one, you aren't eligible for the other. |
