Thoughts on this career field/path

Isn’t this just party planning for corporate girlies?

Sounds like the job title you give your niece or nephew who has some social skills and flexible ethics, but not much else to offer.

It really depends as it can mean several different things. Public companies, private companies/private equity, which path are you specifically looking at? Some are glorified salespeople but others have to have sharp financial and verbal acumen with high EQ and social skills.

DD is exploring this field. She goes to college in nyc and that seems to be the primary market for this job given it’s the financial capital of the world. She is also exploring corporate access but that seems to be only limited to an area like nyc that is heavily concentrated in finance. Just concerned about career growth and trajectory.

This article is old, but you may find it helpful. Guys that work for hedge funds/on Wall Street are pretty awful. Their egos are incredible. At the end of the day it is a marketing position. A “shrinking violet” would not do well. You need to be able to stand up for yourself and show grace under pressure.

The person I know who does this could not hack investment banking and switched to this but is pretty in a generic next door kind of way and can talk your ear off.

This comment reads like a caricature of a business major from the 90s.

If you are in IR for a public company you’d better be smart and understand the business because day to day you are the one dealing with buy and sell side people. If you are in IR for a private equity firm it’s more of a marketing and customer service job and less intense. Regardless, they are good jobs.

It is the fluffy part of the industry. I would not do it because they are not taken seriously.

It pays well though and seems more cushy and less prone to layoffs unlike a marketing or sales jobs in regular corporate companies or agencies if I am correct?
