Opinion: neighbor's garage is unsightly - should I ask them to paint it?

Anonymous
Our neighbor in the back has a garage that sits at the back of their property and is right against our fence. It's a huge garage - two car and a loft or something as it seems like it's two stories. It's a brick structure except for the loft part that is painted wood siding.

Problem is the paint part is really peeling and looks terrible. It is such a big structure it's prominent in our backyard and makes our yard look unkept.

We are planning on putting our house on the market in the spring and wanted to talk with them about them painting it. They take good care of their home and yard and I'm thinking because they never see the back of the garage they don't know it's a mess. I have only said hello to them a few times so I really don't have an opportunity to casually bring it up.

Should I ask them if they were aware that it's peeling it and if they would paint it? Should I offer to chip (yuk yuk) in?

I wouldn't do it.

No way. Plant some trees or other landscaping to hide it from your own view.

Have a BBQ and invite them over.

In your backyard of course.

I would talk to them and would offer to have the rear side of the garage professionally painted in a color of their choice. that is, the side that faces your yard.

OP: there is no way to hide it with trees without waiting years and years. The peeling paint parts starts like 20 feet off the ground and is about 20 feet wide.

NO!

If there is no way to hide it using landscaping, as suggested by PP, and you think it is such an eyesore that it will seriously affect your house sale...then you can certainly go to your neighbor and offer to have it painted--at your expense.

I don't see what you have to lose. You are moving soon, and if you are willing to pay for it, why not? I'd go all the way and paint the front, too.

OMG - we have neighbors with an enormous garage that is spotless and ALSO a huge carport that is an absolute embarrassment (well they should be, but they are not).

They pile all this sh*t in the carport (faces the street) that is visible and makes it look like a dumping ground. It is so hideous, unsightly and other neighbors have seen vermin in and out of there. If I wasn't allergic to cats, I would have gotten one by now because of those neighbors alone. Other neighbors are even more disgusted than I am.

Anyway, whatever you can do to block the view works. If you have to call the health department, that might help too.

Really? The health dep't, for a neighbor's peeling paint?

DCUM provides endless entertainment.

Maybe the paint contains lead and that is a danger to the community.

Do you have a homeowners association?

NO...You have no idea what their financial circumstances are and it's obnoxious. Now you could offer to pay to have it painted the color of their chosing.

Go over and ask them if the paint is lead paint ... tell them you are thinking of selling and you think there may be regulations about loose lead paint chips. Bet they paint it.
