brake problem in my brand new toyota camry-help!!!!

Anonymous
I have a 2010 camry since February of 2010 and 2 weeks ago, as I was driving with my 2yo daughter I was not able to stop on the traffic light. The car statted fishtailing eventhough I was not driving fast(I was on a 40 miles/hr max road and driving slowly as I was aproching a yellow light). Unable to stop I passed the yellow light and went through another green light after and when I tried to press the brake again it was like nothing ever happend. I contacted toyota dealership and they came to get the car, as I did not feel that it is safe to drive. Now it is 2 weeks later(tomorrow) and still nothing. They are saying taht it did not duplicate the brake issue and now I am eaiting for a toyota corporate mechanic to come and look at it. hat do I do? I jjust do not feel that the car is safe. I was lucky this time but next time I might be on the highway when the brakes fail.I am so frustrated, angy and hopeless. PLease help me. I appreciate any advice.

Did you see this?

I'd write to Toyota corporate as well as just the dealer. I had to do that with my Honda and my problem was quickly fixed.

Sorry, I just read again that you've already spoken to corporate.

I hope they get it fixed.

There's no way I could be enticed to buy a toyota.

That is super scary!

Definately don't drive the car--your life isn't worth it.

Did you have a it looked at by a regular trustworthy mechanic? They might be able to offer some insight.

I would keep being persistant about getting it fixed. Did Toyota offer you a rental car or can you get one through your insurance?

I recently had some braking issues with my car and I took it to the Shady Grove Auto Clinic in Gaithersburg. It was recommended by a friend at work of mine. John, the mechanic was really nice, he inspected my brakes, fixed the issue within 24 hours, and seemed fair. I got my car back today and so far so good (*knock on wood*)

If you don't hear anything keep pushing. It must be so frustrating, I feel for you.

Take it back and get a Kia. Much safer, better constructed, and a kick ass warranty.

I am very very very frusrtated at this point(it is 3rd week today). The local dealer did test the car and said that they cannot duplicate what has happend to me. The car is still at the dealer and they did give us another(super dirty and smelly corolla)in a mean time. WE have contacted the hc toyota and waiting for paper work to do arbitration.I am not sure what to expect and what is the cost to us going to be. The dealer did offer us trade in( $19000 for it and the car was priced at $32000 when we got it). This has been such a awaful experience, I hope noone has to go trough it.

I wish you the best of luck. I feel for you. If they offered it for free I don't think I'd drive a Toyota right now. I have heard many cases on the news about people reporting exactly what you said happened, only accidents were caused, and "cannot duplicate what happened" was always Toyota's claim when it came to determining if it was a faulty brake issue. I'd definitely stay right on top of it. If possible, you might want to see if another trustworthy mechanic can look at it, and perhaps they will be able to "duplicate what happened" and than Toyota will have no leg to stand on.

Look up the Lemon Law in your state--you can probably google and find the requirements...if it's a brake problem they can't fix, they will probably have to take it back.

Agree...find a mechanic you trust and explain the problem. There are only so many ways the brakes can fail. It is not a terribly complex system.

PP here. What happened exactly when they failed completely? Did the brake pedal feel soft, as in no resistance when you stepped on it? You are describing two different things. Fishtailing is from your back tires skidding, either from slick roads, too much speed or the brakes locking completely, which can be from stomping on the brake. The brakes failing is the opposite of this. One possibility is front brake being soft due to air in the brake line. You need to make sure there is not a brake fluid leak somewhere. The problems you describe cannot be completely caused by a computer glitch. Any mechanic should be able to check over the basic parts.

Thanks everyone!!!!I appreciate all the help!!!!!I will try to explain better: as I was driving and approching the traffic light I am not able to stop. As I am pressing the brake. the car is fishtailing and the brake is not responding(it is not very loose but the car is NOT slowinng down). As I said the car is at the dealer at the moment and we have asked the dealer for another mechanic from the toyota hc but they said that their mechanic took a look /checked the car and the problem did not duplicate. It seams to me that the dealer just does not care.I am in a process of checkinng the lemon law, so thanks to that post and all of you for help.

Look at all the trouble with Toyota's recently. Of course, the dealer is going to tell you they can't duplicate problem. $19,000 and you paid $32,000? Tell Toyota to stick it where the Sun don't shine and call local consumer group, 7 on your side and other media outlets. Toyota cannot afford any more bad publicity. Also, other PP is right about KIA--they are great cars.

Have you taken it to a non-toyota mechanic? Try to see if you can have it checked out by a trustworthy impartial mechanic. I know it's at the dealership, but you have the right to have it reinspected by someone else for a 2nd opinion.
