Scary strangers came to my FB

Anonymous
Yes, I use Facebook.
I am a Boomer.
I have many cousins--we are descended from 2 sisters who married two brothers more than 100 years ago and there has always been a strong family connection as a result--there's a round robin letter that comes 2x a year with everyone's news and photos and clippings, started just after WWII that is still going on but likely to soon come to an end as only one of the 12 original first cousins is still living. FB is especially how the news gets to everyone when someone reaches the end of life and helped me not miss my mom's favorite cousin's 99th birthday last spring.
I grew up in a small down that was booming when we grew up and declined later and belong to a group of people from there, I love seeing people I haven't thought of for decades turn up.
Same for college friends (I went to a very small college)

I don't post a lot and I've never worried about security. Last 4 posts (over a month): 2 of my dog, 1 joke post showing my weed pile and asking what price I can get from my "harvest" and a photo of an "UNVAXED" license plate seen in a parking ramp of a very well known medical center I accompanied a family member to.
But I made a post about the celebratory mood of Trump supporters after the shootings (let's admit it, they're cheering). Four people I have zero connection with, from Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Texas showed up calling me evil and vile. I reported and blocked them but what IS this? I've never had random people show up except men who claim to be 4 star generals, use a fake photo, and say they want to be friends, and that's not often.
I don't go trolling for random strangers on FB to harass them!

You don’t recognize the difference between celebratory and grateful we narrowly avoided another civil war?

Why is your security on social media so loose? You should have it set so only people you're FB friends with can see or comment on your posts at all.

I’ve seen more random people’s Facebook posts in my feed lately. If you have your posts set to public, your most recent post could have just shown up those commenter’s feeds. Check your settings and make sure they’re set to private so only your friends can see them.

In addition to tightening up your privacy settings I would advise you to never make any political posts whatsoever. People are way too sensitive right now, especially about their candidate almost getting his brains blown out. If you want to click like on someone else's post feel free but don't create your own, it just invites trouble.

I’ve read there are data farms where peopl/computers literally troll the net and make comments specifically to rile people up. Tighten your settings and don’t give the trolls another thought. They’re trying to make you mad and trying to divide America. Sadly, it’s working b/c Americans spend way too much time online.

Why do you have a public profile? It's not 2008.

Was the post set to public? Just post to “Friends” and set that as your default.

Though I do agree with pp, I think it’s best to avoid posting anything political on FB. Save that for DCUM!

It’s a public platform. Welcome to the internet!

I'm not going to change my profile. BTW if I had I wouldn't have noticed these goons, or precisely what made them barge in. I've blocked and reported them.
When I said scary, not to me personally but as a reflection of what's going on right now.

You should not have your settings to "anyone can see/reply", but do not engage in political posting on facebook, period.

By keeping your profile public you're making all your fb friends, and theirs too, targets for phishing. They will get a friend request from a fake copy of your account and half will probably accept without a second thought.

If you don't want strangers commenting, stop having your feed public. This is on you.

It’s not changing your profile, it’s changing your defaults for posting. It just means that your posts become visible to your friends only, instead of everyone on the planet. Your FB profile itself is still public.
