TTC: Semen Analysis

Anonymous
Asking for a friend… will OB/GYNs order a semen analysis or must a man make an appt with a GP or Urologist?

How does one start the investigation?

Semen analysis can only be done at a fertility clinic like Shady Grove. Labcorp also does them but only once per month when their seven analysis guy is on site. It must be read right away.

Thanks for the reply. Can the GYN write the order for the male?

They won't write an order for someone that is not their patient

But a primary care doctor could

OK, thanks.

Back in my day, my doc wrote and RX my husband was able to take to a military lab.

Yes, the OB can order it.

Avoid the “at-home” kits; those are nearly worthless. You have to have him tested at an actual fertility practice like Fair Oaks fertility.

Labcorp or a fertility clinic can run the labs. Either way, will need to schedule in advance for both date and location.

Any MD can write the lab Rx.

A semen analysis at Shady Grove was covered by our insurance when we didn’t have fertility benefits. It’s just a lab test. Make a consult visit with an in-network provider at SGF, then you’re in their system and get a portal login and they will order the test when you have the consult.

Why are the 'at-home' kits worthless? My understanding is at home doesn't provide as much precision vs. getting a full semen analysis done, but it's sufficient for most people.

The real problem with the at-home kits are all the false results. Plus, so many more things can go wrong with those kits.

It’s best to take him in and have him tested right there in the clinic.

Lookup Yo Sperm. At home test very simple and can share the results with doctor. It only test motility, but most issues for men relate to motility.

If you’re going to make your man do this, the least you can do is show up and help.
